I know this is so cliche' but If you can't do the time don't do the crime. We all know that we are dealing with a scheduled I substance here and all the risks associated with it. Law enforcement is completely ignorant when it comes to dmt. They see what they think is a meth lab and jump on it with the intent of using it as a victory for the drug war to promote their fear mongering agenda via the media. Keep your shit strait and there will be no problems unless you load a little too much in your gvg and start to wig out that isWink

If you're in it for the real deal, your journeys would have showed you that it is not a 'hangout' kind of thing...yet, this IS in florida, so go figure...lol

Pretty unfair to be characterizing this guy--as The Traveler has noted, it's essentially impossible to know the true facts of a situation from the newspaper story.

And before laying so much castigation on this person, has anyone stopped to think that the person in the news story and the OP may very well be the same person?

Prohibition is a crime against humanity--and no victim of that crime deserves foul treatment from ANYONE...and certainly not from people who, but for a twist of fate, could end up being a victim themselves.

However, all such stories serve the purpose to REMIND US of the risks, and hopefully get us thinking about how to circumvent them.

1) Be aware of all the nasty complications of living with someone who could very UNWISELY (even innocently) give permission for a search.
2) If you're going to be working, consider an "emergency dump/destruction" scenario for your goods. Come to think of it, I wouldn't at all mind hearing from our chemists members about a reagent that could be dumped onto DMT which would CLEAVE/DESTROY IT somehow--so the gunk couldn't show up as DMT on analysis after that. Such would make for a handy bottle of stuff to have while extracting--if you hear the door crash in upstairs.
3) Have REALLY good stashing places. Come on people, you can THINK. The very BEST stashes are off site.
4) Noting in this instance that even the LSD possession is only a MISDEMEANOR, give thought to the advantages of having only small amounts accessible at any particular time. Larger amounts could be kept off site--I favor burying in a public, rural place (things can be buried under a rock, for example, and the rock removed and replaced as often as one likes, without making signs that the ground had been disturbed).

This incident is unfortunate, but this individual did not make wise decisions. Again I don't know the whole story, but I always imagine that there's more to it than the report gives away. it does raise an interesting question, however, one that I haven't yet been able to answer. I live on a private residence that is owned by my legal guardians, but I live alone in an apartment that is separate from the main building. I weighed the risks before giving myself the go ahead with this project, and have encountered no issues so far. The question is: should I tell them? and why or why not?

i dont wanna muck up this area with a bunch of quotations but suffice it to say that everyone is saying a lot of legitimate stuff about this i.e. he's young, probably in over his head, made some mistakes in multiple regards (selling AND security) but i wanted to offer my two cents:

this is unfortunately an all-too-often reminder about the war on personal freedom being waged by our (american) representatives and should really only serve to motivate some constituents to write their congresspeople

this is a great opportunity to pause and reflect on our own systems of protection over our choices to experiment with illegal substances... i think sharing ideas on how to avoid this short of dynamic legislation would be a good topic

traveler is right; we dont know what actually happened so best not to assume anything on either side of the fence. as a defense lawyer i can say that arrest reports as well as news stories go hand-in-hand as exactly that - STORIES

it sucks to hear a story like this almost universally but it does provide an opportunity to improve our own position/situation in light of it

thoughts?

I don't understand the difference between one is using something for the purposes of "escaping" something or for "spiritual" reasons. In order to use it for spiritual reasons, you must still escape this normal reality in order to appreciate that there is something more to yourself, the people around you, and reality as a whole. In the process of simply using it for "escapism," whatever that may mean, one may discover the true power that lies within and then further use becomes what some might call "spiritual."

I guess I bristle at the notion that to want to give yourself a break from this reality, whether for spiritual purposes or not, is somehow inherently "wrong." Do we not all do this when we read a book, watch a movie, listen to music, take a nice long drive and zone out, go for a walk in the park, or play a game of cards with friends? What is the "reality" that one is actually escaping, anyway? The reality that you must do many unpleasant things in life in order to survive, the reality that there are a lot of people out there who are just completely mean-spirited, invasive, condescending, or brutal?

The idea that wanting to get away from that, even if temporarily, is somehow a bad thing, seems illogical. If one escapes "too much," that will inevitably make its presence known in that individual's life and then that person can choose to act on it or not. No matter what, it is a learning experience, and not one that should be a priori considered bad.

I hope I don't sound like I'm moralizing... I'm actually against that Smile

This is actually pretty sad. I know him in real life and go to the same school as him and thanks to the news reports and the ignorance of people that go to our school people are equating this to busting a meth lab. He's actually a pretty smart and nice kid but now his future is completely ruined. The worst part is that people at our school are ridiculing him and making up rumors ever since this aired on the news.

I can't leave this alone. This statement frustrates me to no end, and I have yet to think of one situation for which it is appropriate. I WOULD do the time for a crime a commit. I WOULD pay a fine for a violation. I WOULD face the consequences for my actions. BUT when the punishment is so vastly blown out of proportion, and we have laws that criminalize completely innocuous behaviors, and in particular laws that aren't founded on principle, it's not enough to say "if you can't do the time don't do the crime." Six weeks and this kid would learn his lesson (which is only that he shouldn't get caught) but a maximum sentence of six years is a little steep no? It's like the speeding ticket I was written back in November...I would've paid 100 but when the officer writes a ticket for over 600 and cuts it down to 300 because in his words he was being "generous" I just want to punch something, and god forbid I can't resist the urge until I roll up the window. There are petty laws that most everyone violates with regularity and without knowing it, and I seriously doubt that I or anyone else is willing to have charges brought up against them for disposing of used razorblades, which is apparently illegal where I live.

With all due respect, if you will take responsibility for your actions and take the necessary precautions to minimize your chances of getting caught then your risk is small. The statement wasn' t made to rub anyone the wrong way it was made to point out the seriousness of the matter of what we all are dealing with as we all are all walking on a thin line. I completely agree with you with ridiculous laws and their absurd penalties but our view doesn' t make it any less severe in the eyes of law enforcement and their willingness to make a posterboy out of you. Major changes need to happen in the legislation of these substances.

No one was was rubbed the wrong way. It's a completely legitimate comment. It's just something I hear or read now and then and usually from people who are goof "law-abiding" citizens. I have sworn an oath of secrecy and have not taken undue risks, and I am confident that I will not encounter any problems. However, the unexpected does happen and I suppose there are always circumstances that might arise for which we can't fully prepare. For one I do no smoke or handle marijuana at my residence, so I will not go down in the same way as this young man. I think I speak for this entire community when I say that existing laws haven't deterred me from experimenting with the spirit molecule, but can anyone really afford to do six years?

I don't live too far from this guy, and know what's going on with the prison system in Wi. It's soo overcrowded right now... With his age, background, ect. I'll bet he get's like 6 months county time (if that), and a bunch of paper, as long as he complies with treatment/terms. It is sad though. Really made me think twice about ever doing anything illegal again.
I have an overactive imagination, and am certifiably insane. So anything I post is purely fictional.

hes 18!! I think most 18 year olds dont have much common sense, I certainly didnt at that age and wrecklessly took lots of drugs and stayed at my mothers, she knew but I didnt tell her every drug I brought in to the house, I was 18 and so is he picking every daft thing out and making him out to be deserving of such things due to his idiocy isnt fair, most 18 year olds are idiots lol

Let me be clear in saying that I don't think anyone should go to jail for using entheogens, particularly naturally occurring plant alkaloids. However, I think it is a cop out to say the guy was just a dumb teenager. The way he was going about his extraction was completely irresponsible and he was pretty much asking for trouble. You should not extract schedule 1 drugs while having a party in your mothers basement, period. When I was his age I was interested in DMT and I never would of considered an extraction under my parent's roof, let alone while chilling with my friends in the basement getting high. Common sense isn't so common but this is not an excuse for his behavior. I hope he can somehow manage to put his life back together after this.

No offense but it sounds like your sort of contradicting yourself there, its a cop out to say hes just a dumb teenager followed by "The way he was going about his extraction was completely irresponsible and he was pretty much asking for trouble. I mean thats just dumb teenager behaviour imo. I didnt know what dmt was at that age but if I did I think I maybe have would have tried to pull of an extraction and probably would have treated it like just another drug, smokeable acid, that sort of thinking. I was a total acid head and would have abused it like I abused acid and other drugs, a lot of people go through drug abuse stages especially in their late teens and act pretty dumb myself included.

Making spice is no crime. R.I.P.rison friend. Tears to you.

Gotta love the land of the 'free'

I remember when I was a teen whipping up dmt and having to worry about parents.. Not the brightest kid smoking ganja while he has his extracting tools out frankly not smart at all but I still feel for his misfortune.

All this has left me with a taste of tyranny in my mouth. United States police are controlled by foreign bankers who don't give two shits. Shattered my dream of becoming a sherrif No. Not happening anymore.
