Jackson - A call to police complaining of a strong odor of marijuana coming from a residence resulted in the discovery of an illegal drug-manufacturing and sales business, Police Chief Jed Dolnick said Thursday.

An 18-year-old man has been charged Thursday with making one hallucinogenic drug in the basement of his mother's condominium and possession of another, LSD, while using the residence for drug trafficking, Dolnick said.

Joshua M. Oliver allegedly cooked dimethyltryptamine, an illegal hallucinogen known as DMT, using a variety of common kitchen utensils: spatula, measuring cups, plastic pitcher, thermometer, knives and glass baking pans, according to a criminal complaint issued by the Washington County district attorney's office.

Jackson police Detective Michael Foeger responded to a citizen complaint of marijuana odors coming from a Cranberry Creek condominium on Nov. 8. He met owner Kimberly Oliver at the door of one of the units. Foeger immediately smelled the odor of marijuana, the complaint says.

When she gave the officer permission to enter the residence and search the basement, her son became agitated and shouted profanities at officers while attempting to block them from entering the basement, the complaint says. He was handcuffed before the search.

Upon entering the basement, police found the drugmaking equipment, a form of LSD known as blotter acid, marijuana and marijuana-smoking paraphernalia, a glass container with a thick brown liquid and a Sunnyside Naphtha container, the complaint says. This brand of Naphtha is sold as a solvent and paint thinner.

Tests at the State Crime Laboratory determined that the brown liquid was the hallucinogen dimethyltryptamine. Naphtha is used in the illicit manufacture of the drug, Dolnick said.

Foeger also met two women in the basement. One of the women had "a black and white powdery substance on her right nostril," the complaint says.

Tests confirmed the powdery substance was methylone, an illegal, synthetic stimulant known on the street as "M1."

Joshua Oliver faces six charges as a result of the investigation, the criminal complaint says.

The charges include: felony manufacturing of DMT, a controlled substance, which carries a prison sentence of up to six years; maintaining a drug trafficking place, a felony with a penalty of imprisonment up to three years and six months; misdemeanor possession of LSD; misdemeanor possession of marijuana; misdemeanor possession of methylone, or M1; and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

What is the frequency of these incidences occurring? I feel like I've been seeing this kind of scenario happening more often lately or maybe each one just sticks with me from the last. It's a terrible thing to see.

After seeing these I've sometimes imagined this happening to me, and I think I'm still young that would suck.

But from the sound of it most, of these articles sound like it's often of their own irresponsibility or negligence towards the seriousness of this situation.

First off when I extract, I do what I do, then I clean up all the materials when I'm done. I keep my spice in a container and keep it hidden when I'm not using it because leaving it out in the open makes a lot of sense . Also If I had some blotter papers those would probably be stashed away somewhere too. Then if I had a few people over smoking pot I probably wouldn't have everything else out too!

Common sense probably would have put him in a much better posistion.

How much DMT was he making to get such a charge? One 100g setup? Or maybe 1-2kg?
Anyone know the Canadian laws? I know in Canada you can have Marijuana in your house and smoking it, just not selling it.

yeah my heart goes out to this guy. can't imagine how scared and alone he would be feeling right now. and he's only 18. i'm 20 and i still feel like a kid

probably kept 2kgs of mimosa lying around or 50g of extracted dmt or something of the sort

If he had just told his mother and gotten consent, had been careful with the weed smell and kept only extracted dmt in amounts justified for personal use he would have most likely been charged for possession and probably would have just walked away with a fine.

I do feel sorry for him though,he will prob get out in a year or 2 but it will be a scarring experience

hes 18!! I think most 18 year olds dont have much common sense, I certainly didnt at that age and wrecklessly took lots of drugs and stayed at my mothers, she knew but I didnt tell her every drug I brought in to the house, I was 18 and so is he picking every daft thing out and making him out to be deserving of such things due to his idiocy isnt fair, most 18 year olds are idiots lol

6 Years for that is a disgrace america is fecked, excuse the language but it is, I love the country when I visited it and would love to again but I could never live in such a facist dictatorship, I moan about the UK but man we have it easy compared to that place, if he was in the UK or EU and a first time offence he probably wouldnt have even got jail, they would see it for what it is a silly 18 year old messing around with drugs, not even addictive drugs like crystal meth or heroin. feel really sorry for him. 6 years, unbeleivable

and whats sad is he got caught with my three drugs of choice...bk-MDMA, LSD and DMT :/ another young psychonaut gets his life ruined for simply trying to explore his own consciousness i guess. I cant wait for the day i leave this psychotic nation.

You're assuming he was "a psychonaut"..."simply trying to explore his own consciousness", but there are other possibilities too:

-He was not trying to explore his consciousness and instead was just trying to get high as an escape mechanism.

-He was a dealer using the substances to take advantage of people and make money.

Remind you that of ALL the news reports that I have seen and where I know what really happened: NONE even came close to what really happened, it was all smucked up, twisted and bend to make it a nice looking news headline that sells. So making conclusions about this person based on this report is as useless as making the same conclusion after seeing a Disney movie.

This can be true yes,but some things (like keeping his mimosa and gear in the same place where he smokes pot) can't be journalistic overselling.Trying to make an 18-year-old sound like a baron though is pretty horrible.As someone above said,in europe he would most likely get a fine and be excused for a first time offense

Idk everyone I know who uses acid and dmt arnt exactly "using it as an escape mechanism" as almost all psychedelics do the exact opposite. If he was trying to escape than I would have expected opiates and dxm. But what ever i guess trav is right.

Why would it be a joke? do you think that only people with pure purposes use and extract spice?

Let me be clear in saying that I don't think anyone should go to jail for using entheogens, particularly naturally occurring plant alkaloids. However, I think it is a cop out to say the guy was just a dumb teenager. The way he was going about his extraction was completely irresponsible and he was pretty much asking for trouble. You should not extract schedule 1 drugs while having a party in your mothers basement, period. When I was his age I was interested in DMT and I never would of considered an extraction under my parent's roof, let alone while chilling with my friends in the basement getting high. Common sense isn't so common but this is not an excuse for his behavior. I hope he can somehow manage to put his life back together after this.

And yet another poor soul captured by the opposition; another potential consciousness explorer is to be locked away where in all likely hood he will be "reformed" by the system (brainwashed into being an upstanding citizen or just another criminal in and out of jail, either way he loses).

I don't know that I necessarily agree that acid and DMT aren't used (by many) as an escape mechanism. Indeed opiates are often abused as escape mechanisms through the masking of pain, but I can think of many who have used psychedelics perhaps not for masking physical pain so much as escaping into a world much different than the tiring physical which may be (mis)perceived as being a colorful, euphoric realm where your troubles don't follow. Especially without spiritual intentions, that's the function more and more that these substances seem to be adapted to.
