The White House unveiled an online privacy proposal Thursday intended to allow Web users to easily opt out of being tracked on the Internet.

The “Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights” has received the backing of leading Internet companies and online advertising networks and would involve a simple “one click” setting on a Web browser, the White House said.

“American consumers can’t wait any longer for clear rules of the road that ensure their personal information is safe online,” President Barack Obama said in a statement.

“As the Internet evolves, consumer trust is essential for the continued growth of the digital economy.

“That’s why an online privacy Bill of Rights is so important,” Obama said. “For businesses to succeed online, consumers must feel secure.

Sounds like they are just trying to come up with ways to get data while lying. There have been quite a few reports lately of security breaches for example google bypassing safari's privacy software to gather data on consumers.

What are your thoughts on this?

Certainly wouldn't put it past them, and it definitely wouldn't be out of character based on their history. It would be rather easy to let your guard down on such security measures if one believed they were foolproof. If they're not lying, then it's a commendable bill as it's not telling you what you can and can't do, but rather providing you with the option to "opt out".

These kinds of maps are hard to find for the present day Internet. But, here's the ARPANET backbone as of 1977. ARPANET created the backbone for what we consider the Internet today. It's rumored, for good reason, one of the largest pipes today runs from Mountain View to an East Coast node somewhere. Notice the entire bottom left of the map...

Privacy on the Internet is a false reality. The government only cares about the privacy of one entity: the government.

Interesting, thanks.

Offtopic but relevant: Acta approval stalled by European commission

I thought this picture was amusing:

Major Retailers already shell out millions to get consumers' browsing history through sites like facebook which read your history and ad software without our knowledge. I don't see any reason, given this, why the government would not already be doing the same... Nor do I see any reason why they would actually hold to their word when allowing us to "opt out". After all, my president sneaks out of New Years Eve parties to sign bills he promised us he would not sign.

Naa, don't worry. He has "serious reservations" about NDAA and promises not to use such power.

I trust nothing that comes out of the white house or out of the mouths of american military officials. They have consistently lied and committed heinous crimes all around the world for the best part of a century. I don't imagine this bill is what it appears to be, but hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised. Personally I make every effort to try and minimize the info that is gathered about me... but I'm sure they still manage. It's fairly boring info they will be getting from me, but it's the principle of it.
