I know intelligence is a word without much meaning, as our minds are as complex as our perceptions of eachother's "intelligence".
This aside, after trying DMT a few times, I have noticed that after each time, the next day it feels like my brain was spit-shined or squeegee'd. It could be placebo but I feel a clarity of thought and action not felt before. By no means have I become a perfect Buddha or something, but I think there is some improvement...
In the past I have also witnessed psilocybin mushrooms temporarily turn a racist into not-a-dumbass. (lol)
What are your opinions on tryptamines' effect on our mental abilities? long term and short term

I wouldn't really say more intelligent or smart, more that dmt, mushrooms and LSD among others, expand the way in which one perceives reality. As for the racist turning non racist, as Terrance said a few times, these substances will make the subject taking them realize how wrong their views or ignorance are.. That and I remember seeing a show once that had a statistic. This statistic stated that a very large percentage of "racist" people are not even racist they just go along with it because they don't want to be looked down on by their racist ignorant friends. The person in your case could have had this realization of ignorance while on the mushrooms. I'm not saying they reliably concretely increase IQ or something, but I am interested in your opinions of how they may affect how we think. I think all experiences and the "non-toxic" drugs may exercise our minds to some degree. Tripping balls could be a "brain-workout", but I suppose a healthy exercise routine would include more scholarly type activities as well. I'm sure if there is any merit to these ideas that they could be explained in a better way.
edit: I also have read somewhere, some person suggested these substances were a way of decalcifying the pineal gland. I am somewhat skeptical of this but it is an interesting thing none-the-less.

Your perspective is broader and possibly more useful... But you still have to interpret this broadened perspective via your existing intelligence. Whatever that word means.

Whatever that word means. for every action there is a reaction. Through the use of psychedelics I have gained in soo many wonderful ways. I have also lost. I do have my regrets, admittedly. Psychedelics don't offer anything to us that we couldn't come up with on our own. They seem to just blast the doors of perception wide open, liberate the true self from the ego, and offer us epiphanies with ironic bluntness more quickly than any other therapy sessions I'm aware of. Some people come out of psychedelic experiences just as ignorant as when they went into the experience, one must become open to digging deep to truly accomplish anything meaningful when they take these magical compounds.(see my signature ) βThe most compelling insight of that day was that this awesome recall had been brought about by a fraction of a gram of a white solid, but that in no way whatsoever could it be argued that these memories had been contained within the white solid. Everything I had recognized came from the depths of my memory and my psyche. I understood that our entire universe is contained in the mind and the spirit. We may choose not to find access to it, we may even deny its existence, but it is indeed there inside us, and there are chemicals that can catalyze its availability.β

This. Sometimes I think psychedelics may have the opposite effect as well - i.e more gullible.

Depends on the person... Certainly seeing/witnessing things that one previously thought impossible can add to a broader view/more open attitude. Personally the experiences have given me mental strenght.

i've seen psychedelics transform rational people into deluional nihilists. these compounds are not a substitute for critical thinking. I wouldn't say they make you smarter per se, but if you already are smart, in the face of so many new information and points of view, it's hard to believe there won't be a synergistic effect, IMO. This is the time to really find out who you are and enjoy every moment you have. Take advantage of it.
