i always get these strange shivers/jitters from taking tryptamines. is there a biological explanation for what causes them? they seem to be just a normal side effect of tryptamines. its not that they bother me.. sometimes they can actually be quite nice. but just out of curiosity i'd love to know what causes them.

SWIM has been experiencing similar "shivers". He had originally written them off as being a side-effect of sleep deprivation, but perhaps. . .

yes I also get them. 'shamanic shakes' is a nice definition

you know when one rewinds a video and sees things going backward fast? So a few times I was imagining these shakes as some sort of 'rewind' of the body tensions, also sometimes this was coupled together with the feeling of being 'cured' from a higher plane.

Foaf 'vibrates' after smoking DMT. It's not really shivering because the movements are too small. It feels really nice and healthy. He doesn't get anything like that with anything else.

I get those shivers constantly, not just in conjunction with tryptamines. For me it is a large, full body twitch accompanied by a flush of goosebumps, sometimes all over, sometimes confined locally to an area. I have had it happening for about 6 years now, although I do attribute it to changes in my energy body due to use of psychedelics in a broader sense. I feel them to be almost another sense being activated, meaning that I have become more sensitive to etheric energies/beings over the years and that these shivers are reactions to these types of energies, which are around us all the time but more prevalent when one has taken psychedelics/tryptamines.

Does your skin get pale and cold when this happens?

I always shake and twitch durring a mushroom come up. Same with DMT or aya, but it feels somehow dirtier when the tryptamine is ingested rather than smoked..like a toxic shiver, feels good after though...

I also get these shakes when I smoke too high a dose of cannabis..which isnt much at all these days. I get shivers coupled with annoying anxiety...

yep same for me on the shrooms just like erowid says that cold feeling & a feeling of 'coming home'

Last time i got the chills, sweating, & shiverimg off DMT i think it was off some left over spice resin.. but yea after a breakthrough even i would expect shivers, expect your body to feel much weirder than shivers.

These effects sound like symptoms of vasoconstriction to me. Most hallucinogens cause vasoconstriction. You might consider taking a vasodilator in conjunction with the hallucinogen to minimize these bodily effects.

yes I think vasoconstriction could be part of it as well..but I also get minor anxiety at times when going into any trip and that could also weigh in..

I usually just put on a hoody and get some blankets and pillows and candles and music all set up around me, with a portable heater nearby incase in get cold. having water close by helps too. I hate walking around my house and having to turn lights ona and such just to get water while peaking, as doing these things can get to be too much and cause my anxiety. If I jsut ly there and wait out the shakes and negative feelings, I usually get really comfy and euphoric, and mellow until I have to do anything..

Yeah sounds to me like it is maybe something to do with the adrenaline pathway, vasoconstriction blood pulling into the central core, probably a mild shock type symptom.

I'll ask a doctor friend who has experienced DMT when I see him in the next week or so and type up a basic report of his advice/perspective if that helps Smile .

cheers

I'm bringing up the thread from the dead.

Is there anything to the 'mild shock' theory here?

Can anyone point me to some good references for this?

After many experiences with DMT and noticing this effect to a small degree I tried 4-AcO-DMT and on the first experiment had this happen massively. My room temp was about 77 but about 20 minutes after ingestion it felt like 55-60. Now I notice it more with smoked DMT for some reason. If I prepare before hand to warm up with blankets, a hoodie, and a warmer room temp its managable and not a negative circumstance. It can be quite pleasant imo. It is healinv I think in some way. The verdict is still out for me as to whether its a shamanic healing deal or simply a physical reaction. I would lean more towards tne shamanic shivers though.

Sister also experiences the shivers while coming down, but never during. If anything she gets hot while lifting off and then cools on touch down. A hoody is the usual solution, and a popular one from the sounds of all the posts.

Vasoconstriction sounds plausible.

I never experience shivers with dmt but I definitely do with shrooms, 4-AcO-DMT, 4-AcO-MiPT and 2C-E (which isn't a tryptamine).

This almost always seems to happen when coming down from vaped spice. Like it's been said, though, it's not uncomfortable. It almost does feel more like vibrating than shaking.

With aya, the perceived body temperature seems to fluctuate wildly, seeming to be freezing one minute, and boiling over hot the next minute. When cold, massive shivers happen, different than coming down from vaped spice. Not sure if that could be chalked up to vasoconstriction or not.
