Just wondering what I should do with the spent lye+mhrb solution? Is it alright to just dump it down the drain or toilet? There's also a small layer of naptha that I couldn't pull off cleanly so I just left it. I was going to do a couple xylene pulls but i decided not to.

Evap the solvent and dump the basic solution down the toilet/drain (what is lye used for?  ) If you want to reduce your environmental impact, neutralize with vinegar and mix with the soil in your garden. hmm mixing it in the garden sounds nice, how much vinegar you think? dumping it down the toilet just doesn't seem right to me haha. thanks for the info

What a1pha was hinting at is that most commercial drain cleaners are made out of lye. That said, pouring a thick MHRB soup with a lot of sediment into your most clogged drain is probably not the best move. I would also avoid using any sink that has a "u-turn" trap on it if it is made of plastic. No need to test whether your sink's catch is made of HDPE 2 when you could just dump in the toilet... or as a1pha said, neutralize with an acid. If you wanna be kind to your garden you should probably get some PH strips to see the exact PH of what you're putting in there. Keep in mind that some people purposely add PH boosters to their soil. Yea I know lye is a drain cleaner, that's what it was sold as. I just feel like it's wrong to just pour this stuff (mhrb) in the same place my shit goes. And yea I was thinking about how pouring it in the garden would mess with pH even if I neutralized it.

So I had the jar sitting on the floor in a corner of the basement with the lid off to evap the small layer of naptha before I disposed of the rest. Woke up this morning to reddish brown dog foot prints everywhere. My dog got into the basement and knocked the jar over. Cleaned up her paws and fortunately she wasn't burned by the lye. Got the stains out of the rug too. But yea, shitty thing to wake up to.

good call auto. strong bases would probably erode the ceramics. some people pour the sludge down a stormdrain, outside by the curb. *EDIT* the people make sure that neighbors aren't up and about. nighttime is best. The more you try to know, the more mysterious life gets..
