If you heat up pure NaOH beads below this temperature do they give off any caustic vapor at all?

If the books say this or that, always keep in mind that in real life things can be more complicated. For example, even though the boiling point is far higher than in your vaporising equipment, some of it might be carried away as fine droplets in the air vortex as you suck, etc etc.
Don't take any risks with NaOH, it eats living tissue for lunch!
