So I'm currently shopping for a seperatory funnel for extractions. I know HDPE is recommended but I'm having problems finding a HDPE Seperatory funnel. I've found some 2L Nalgene funnels but I'm not sure if they are LDPE, HDPE or other. I've asked the supplier if they know. I looked at the Nalgene site and they make a bunch of plastics used in their products so there is no clear cut answer.

Next what about Pyrex, I know NaHO H2O can etch and crack glass, so should I avoid a Pyrex seperatory funnel?

Finally I see that many of them have PTFE stopcocks, should I avoid this and go w/ a glass stopcock? If I'm correct PTFE is Teflon, and from what I read that is to be avoided.

Pyrex, borosilicate, are your best options. HDPE leaches plasticizers. There's lots on eBay and other places.

Would you also recommend doing extractions w/ pyrex or borosilicate versus HDPE? If I were to basify with something other than NaHO would I have those same problems as etching or HDPE leaching plasticizers?

Yep- I won't even use HDPE anymore for this reason. They will leach regardless. Always extract with thick glass, pyrex, or borossilicate. Don't be worried about etching unless the glass is thin. Extract in a sink or something similar if you are worried your vessel will break.

The contact of the basified solution and sep funnel would be quite brief so I wouldn't worry that much about NaOH reacting with it.

As for size, 2l might be an overkill since you already reduce and why not get it lower and save money on the sep I have 1l one but I guess it all depends on how big do you plan your batches to be.
