I'm not an expert, but I have been told on good authority that dozens of 'lovely chems' make their way into the urine in fine form for consumption. Muscimol is the most famous, but the DXM metabolite DXO is present in the urine in large quantities (enough to seriously boost or extend a journey) for example. I have met many a shaman who sang the praises of their post shroom or cacti pisses as well. To get the old ball rolling, I will say that urine is sterile when it comes out, (unless you have some crazy disease)... and it is not waste material (as with feces), but rather a balancing of the body's mostly useful stuff. As far as I know, there is nothing toxic in urine (in reasonable amounts), but actually a wealth of minerals, salts, hormones, and other interesting things. If one is drinking a lot of water, the urine comes out relatively clear, and with a pleasant aroma and taste. Most people are rather dehydrated, and piss can quickly go rancid... hence the popular feeling that pee is stinky and gross. There are people who drink a bit of their urine regularly and claim it has a number of health benefits. I won't get into any unfounded health claims here, and I am too tired to do any linking at the moment, but I suspect that some of you know somethings that might be of interest. I recognize that many of you might be uncomfortable with this topic, and if there is no real interest in discussing this, I can totally understand. But, it is not as weird or gross as some of you might think. There may come a time when the idea of tasting some of your own well hydrated urine might not give you the willies. And it would be nice to know exactly what psychoactive chems one might be able to recycle this way. After all, some of these things are in short supply... and, at least with Amanitas, they are actually safer and healthier to consume post urination and free from the toxins that the liver has already processed. Note to people: Urine does not store well. Do not consume urine that has been standing around for even a handful of hours. It is possible to add something preservative and store it in the fridge, but that does seem rather desperate. I would like to say that my introduction to urine as a health aid came rather young on a trip to the Caribbean. Having stepped on a sea urchin, a local guide smiled his Rastafarian smile, and after helping me remove the 2 or 3 quills that were stuck in my foot... he commanded me to piss on it. I balked, but he was serious. He said, " If you don't piss on it mon, I will! But it is better if you do it. Your body is used to your piss... you might get mighty high if I piss on your foot." (insert your best Bob Marley voice here) So, I did. And it was a lot less of a deal than I have heard from other people who stepped on urchins and got infections or what not. Granted, there are other antibiotics. But this one was free, immediate, didn't sting, and it did the trick. The fact that he joked that I could get high from his piss made me laugh... and then later on in my life, made me think. I read a lengthy study on the practice of high priests in ancient Near Eastern religions going to the walls of the temple and pissing off the edge. The citizens would stand below with pots and try to catch the urine for drinking. Apparently, those priests must have been mighty toasted on some serious stuff, because the reports tend to indicate that the poor masses actually got high from the priest's piss. Perhaps this is some confirmation that the drug of choice in those times, Soma, was truly an Amanita. Maybe not. It does seem that a number of drugs have active metabolites (or even come through completely unchanged) in the human urine stream. If this talk makes you uncomfortable, I apologize. Despite the giddy tone from before, I am actually interested in learning more about this, as it actually does work. And hey, no one is required to read this or any thread. No one is telling anyone to go out and drink piss. This is just an exploration of another "method of exploring consciousness." (Typically one of my favorite subfora here.) Anyone knowledgeable on this subject? Anyone read any studies or reports? "Curiouser and curiouser..." ~ Alice

As a frequent amanita user, I've experimented preserving my urine after consuming a larger amount (8-10 g) of the shrooms. It smelled like a shroom soup , and its taste was shrommy & salty. Not disgusting at all. It had similar effect as the shrooms consumed in their normal, dried form, without the nausea. I've read somewhere that urine is very effective when someone has the flu. So I tried it a few times, and it did reduce my fever (I wasn't taking any medication) and I recovered sooner than usually. I really don't know if the anti-inflammation effect of the urine is scientifically proven or not, however it worked for me.

Hopefully you could tell I was joking. I don't feel at all uncomfortable with it, in fact, it is an interesting subject, I just couldn't think of anything worthwhile to add to the discussion so I made a piss joke.

Seriously, I am curious as to what Nexians think about the recycling of alkaloids and whatnot that are clearly present in our piss.
Pros, cons... health benefits or warnings?
People actually do this, so we should probably address it. I think nature makes a pretty sustainable supply of these alkaloids and I don't really give any thought to recycling them! Pro's. You can save your piss after a few trips, reduce it down, and get high again. Kinda like revaping weed. it works, but barely. Con's. You are drinking piss. During this process you realize that your life is so pathetic that you have resorted to actually drinking piss in hopes of getting high. Hopefully someone you love will take you to a treatment facility to give you the help you need before you crack a Bon Jovi CD in half and slit your wrists out of utter despair. Peace. I think that we should not be disgusted with the topic of our own piss. Only in modern society has urine become something "gross" and socially unnacceptable. Cultures throughout time have known and used the health benefits of drinking one's own urine, its nothing new. And thats not even to get high, many people and cultures drink piss to cleanse the body. So i think it is a perfectly acceptable topic, and shame on those who think "eeeew piss, its so disgusting and horrible" (just joking dont attack me) You have never been apart from me. You can never depart and never return, for we are continuous, indistinguishable. We are eternal forever

Care to quote some reliable source for "health benefits of drinking one's urine" ? Appeal to tradition is a logical fallacy, so is there any other data to corroborate with this idea?

Ok, on a more serious note I did find this passage interesting. Quote:Auto-urine drinking and meditation Drinking one's morning urine ('amaroli' was an ancient yoga practise designed to promote meditation. The ancient Hindu and yoga texts that mention auto-urine drinking, require it be done before sunrise and that only the mid-stream sample be used.[34] The pineal hormone melatonin and its conjugated esters are present in morning urine in significant quantities, the pineal gland secreting melatonin maximally at about 2 am, this secretion being shut off by the eyes' exposure to bright sunlight.[34] Melatonin, when ingested or given intravenously, amongst other effects, provokes tranquility and heightened visualisation.[34] There are high concentrations of melatonin in the first morning urine, but not in a physiologically active form.[34] Mills and Faunce at Newcastle University Australia in 1991 developed the hypothesis that ingestion of morning urine into low pH gastric acid would cause deconjugation of its esters back to the active form of melatonin. This, they suggested, might restore plasma night-time melatonin levels. Thus, they argued, oral pre-dawn consumption of auto-exogenous melatonin, by either re-setting of the sleep-wake cycle or enhancement of the physiological prerequisites for meditation (decreased body awareness (i.e. analgesia) and claimed slowed brain wave activity, as well as heightened visualization ability), may be the mechanism behind the alleged benefits ascribed to 'amaroli' or auto-urine drinking by ancient texts of the yogic religion.[34] Obvious experimental difficulties (particularly in constructing a double-blind clinical trial) mean that this is a difficult hypothesis to reliably test to any requisite evidence-based standard. http://en.wikipedia.org/...py#cite_note-Middleton-0But make no mistake it say's this at the top of the page. Quote: While there are no known scientifically proven health benefits of such therapeutic use for urine, some chemical components of urine do have some well known commercial and other uses, like urea and urokinase. If your religion, faith, devotion, or self proclaimed spirituality is not directly leading to an increase in kindness, empathy, compassion and tolerance for others then you have been misled.

Endlessness, Appeal to tradition is only a logical fallacy if it is the only backing of a claim for the objective truth of something other than that there is a tradition of doing something. Showing that there is a well established tradition of a certain activity is not in and of itself a fallacy if the only intention is to demonstrate that there is a tradition. I never claimed there were proven health benefits to drinking urine. Your use of quotation marks is misleading and could be also construed as a type of logical fallacy. What I said was "There are people who drink a bit of their urine regularly and claim it has a number of health benefits." I even follow this up by saying I wouldn't get into the unfounded health benefits claim. This thread was designed to talk about psychoactive urine, but I don't mind straying into health benefits of non psychoactive urine. Let's just not get our panties in twist about proving claims that haven't been made. @joedirt Thanks for the info on melatonin in urine. I had read things to that effect before, and considering how noticeable my consumption of melatonin sublingual tabs can be in very small doses... I don't doubt that it might be possible to utilize these esters or convert the melatonin in some way. As for urea, the claim that piss is good for the skin and hair is backed up by the fact that many commercial products for the skin have urea as an ingredient. There are reams of anecdotal stories of people using urine to keep the skin looking young. I would be interested to see any information that people have about the chemical or physiological reasons that urine might be good in this way. And, there are other reasons to use urine than out of despair or some psychological shortcoming. Waste not want not is a virtue that comes to mind. If you are on a psychedelic, and coming down... the knowledge that you might be able to safely use your own natural bodily function to increase, intensify or lengthen a trip is not an idea that should necessarily be looked down upon. Personally, I was always fascinated by the reports of witches drinking their urine. Hyperspace Fool, my question wasnt aimed at you but the poster above my quote which claimed other cultures knew of health benefits, exactly as I quoted, and im wondering which, and if theres any data (because, just being old or being used traditionally doesnt necessarily mean it really has benefits appart from placebo at least).. As you may have noticed in my other post in the first page, I have a totally neutral stance on the issue of using piss, really just trying to gather more info here because im pretty uninformed on the issue and I find interest in discussing supposed taboo subjects rationally

I was joking about the despair and wrist slitting! Figured the Bon Jovi reference was a dead give away! LOL Anyway considering that piss almost certainly tastes better than MRHB+Cappi based aya I suppose I can see how someone would consider doing it. However, if I actually went through with it I would personally feel like a drug fiend. Ah snap. I missed the quote from Harmalosa. Sorry to jump to conclusions. I thought the only mention of that phrase had been mine. I am also interested in rational discussion of this. My bringing up tradition is merely done to show that this is not a subject conjured out of thin air, but something that has been widely reported and practiced... this doesn't make it an object of scientific fact per se, but does reveal it as a subject worthy of further investigation. It is unlikely that people would continue to engage in piss drinking if they didn't receive some benefits (at least in terms of a placebo). The length of history also speaks to the lack of serious negative side effects or adverse health concerns, as there is almost no mention of such adverse reactions in the historical record.
