Amsterdam Cannabis Cup Raided - First time in 24 years

When conservatives who seized power in the Netherlands this year closed coffeeshops in the southern part of the country to weed tourists, it seemed like an unfortunate bummer.

This morning, however, police in Amsterdam are in the process of raiding the 24th annual High Times Cannabis Cup Expo. Possession of marijuana has been decriminalized in the Netherlands. But according to tweets on the scene, "everyone will have their buds confiscated, but no one will be charged or fined. This is the first time this has happened in 24 years."

According to @DanaLarsen, Director of the Vancouver Cannabis Dispensary Society, "Police officer told me they investigated yesterday, saw some booths giving out weed and breaking other rules. So now the event is shut down."

"Everyone has to leave except for exhibitors. Cops are friendly and polite."

Perfect example of how government not only wants to control our lives, but also shows how afraid government is of people experiencing altered states of consciousness... Why? Is it because by use of natural entheogens people tend to realize that the truths of reality and can see these systems of power and control for what they really are? I mean, it's crazy that government would say that any natural substance is illegal... That's like saying God messed up and man has to step in and correct his mistakes... NOT LIKELY! What should be completely illegal are things like alcohol, oxycontin, cocaine, and other dangerous chemicals that destroy our bodies and our minds... But, at the same time, nothing should be illegal to anyone, if I want to snort some cocaine or shoot some heroin then that's my choice...

Fuck the netherlands!!!! The most insignificant and shitty peace of real estate on the planet, with it´s blond hitler-wannabe and his retarded white-trash followers. The stink of provincialism is almost choking there. Luckily the whole country is sinking, so it´s only a matter of time untill the rest of the world will no longer be bothered by those narrowminded shitheads.

Sounds like the plight of someone who is either ignorant or allowing themselves to be manipulated by external "things". No offense, just that when someone speaks out of hate and anger, it is because one of those two reasons.

No, i just had to get this of my chest. I live in this...shitland...and the fascists are basically in charge of the country. You have no idea how retarded the place has become. It IS a sinking ship. 65% of the people supported this fascist administration...meaning 65% of the dutch people belief that muslims are inferiour beings. There can be NO, i repeat NO excuse at all, ever...for supporting the current government.
People who support this government are no better than those germans back in the 30´s and 40´s with their hands up in the air when hitler drove by in his open mercedes. I´m deadserious, those people make me sick.

But not everyone votes right? Do you really feel everyone's the same there? They sure aren't here. Last night here Newt Gingrich said he didn't like child labor laws! I could have slapped him! Him. Not all the voters and non-voters, friends and neighbors I know here. Some might even think or look like him. Until they say my kid must labor or something like that I will wait on saying "everyone"

I guess I am okay with despising or hating single people. But whole groups or countries is the same as what was called above, right? That's the kind of stuff Hitler pushed.

And people who support this government ARE fascist drones...all of them. And i´m not gonna take that back.

The big leader of this coalition government openly talks about muslims as if they´re not even humans, like they´re some kind of animals. Using words like 'islamic cattle' when refering to the 1.000.000 muslims living in the netherlands.

The country will never be the same again for me. It´s not my country anymore. I will never forgive those people, ever.

I don´t drink alcohol normally, but the day wilders get´s shot (and i sincerely hope this will happen)...i´m opening a bottle of champagne. And i mean that.

"This just in from David Holland, event counsel, via comments.
"Chillax, all is good over there. I am one of the attorneys for High Times and this started over a misunderstanding about a permit application filed by the venue to host the event. Our US and Dutch lawyers have just finished reviewing them with the police there. No attendees have been arrested and attendees are not the targets of the police presence. Police are ensuring that all vendors are in compliance with the 500 gram limit under the Opium Law for licensed vendors at the venue. Only one vendor has been identified as potentially over the limit, but only slightly. In any event, the show will go on tomorrow and additionally, the Melweg will be opening at 2pm tomorrow to accomodate judges who do not wish to trek outside of Amsterdam so that they can avoid the lines and vote early. Further details will be posted on the High Times site later today."

Despite Dutch police actions at expo, annual HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cup will continue...

"According to representatives for HIGH TIMES magazine, sponsors of the 24th Annual Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, the event will continue tonight with a scheduled concert at the Melkweg concert hall (Lijnbaansgracht 234), followed by a full day of the expo (including voting) at the Borchland (Borchlandweg) on Thursday, the final day of the competition. An additional voting station will be set up starting at 2PM on Thursday at the Melkweg, which will remain open until the beginning of the official Cannabis Cup awards ceremony at 8PM.

Organizers say that their interactions with Dutch law enforcement started over a misunderstanding about a permit application filed by the venue to host the event, a situation that lead to a clearing of the expo by law enforcement. The misunderstanding has since been resolved.

No attendees were arrested and attendees are not the targets of the police presence. Police entered the expo to ensure that all vendors were in compliance with tax laws and a 500 gram limit for cannabis that’s enforced in the Netherlands. Only one vendor has been identified as potentially over the limit, and if so, only slightly. Continue to check http://hightimes.com for the latest coverage of this ongoing global ganja event!"

Haha, you thought? Spice or not we are still open to being stressed out or angered by things. I am not sure that mellowing out is even a good thing anyway.

-Yes it is a bummer, but we have to understand that Holland is doing this to attempt to limit the drug tourism and illegal cross border smuggling.

-Cannabis is still fine if you're a local, but less so if you are a tourist. The cannabis cup is mostly a touristy thing anyhow.

I live in the Netherlands myself, and yes, I completely disagree with everything this government has done. But it's important to get your statistics right. 76 of 150 chairs in parliament are occupied by the government (racist populists 24, right-wing neoliberals 31, christian conservatives 21).
Don't know where your 65% comes from.
The main issue with democracy, although there is no alternative at the moment, is that the majority of people are stupid, easily influenced, and make their vote based on feelings instead of rational thought. Holland has been a leading country with the same-sex marriage, marijuana laws and other pragmatic, liberal laws. Unfortunately fear has people in it's grip, fear for change. Yes, things have been getting worse and worse in the last 10 years, and last year it's going awfully fast. It seems like it is 'cool' to be right-wing, just as it was cool to be left in the 60's/70's.
This worries me, but I'm optimistic about the future of Holland. We still have a lot left to be destroyed, and the tides will turn, believe me. People are starting to understand what mistake they made now that the effects of neoliberal policy are showing. In a few years we can start rebuilding what has been destroyed.
On drug laws, internationally it is going the right way for sure. Drug possession has been decriminalized recently in whole latin-america and a lot of european countries. The US are, slowly, going the right way too. The growing scientific understanding of the effect of drugs, and especially drug prohibition, will keep making drug policy more pragmatic and rational. I believe that, eventually, it will come to a point where all drugs are legal and people will all be properly informed about the effects of each drug.
But then again, I'm an optimist.

I'm curious, are there people here who disagree with me? About making all drugs legal? I believe that even heroine and crack should be legal, because this is the only way to make education about these substances objective. If some drugs are legal, and some not, it is not possible for the government to make a distiction between the illegal drugs. For example, kids are being told 'drugs are bad, m'kay', without telling them doing LSD is probably a way better idea than doing heroin. Schools cannot do this, because these substances are both equally illegal.
