The B.C. doctor who allowed a film crew to document his use of a traditional Amazonian tea to help drug addicts has been ordered to end the treatments.

Dr. Gabor Maté was using ayahuasca, which induces a trance that unlocks painful memories to help drug addicts end their addictive behaviour.

Since CBC News reported on Maté's work on Sunday, Health Canada has threatened him with criminal prosecution if he continues.

"Naturally I will have to comply with the regulations as I received them, and I intend to," Maté said.

"It's not a big personal loss for me because it's a small part of what I do. But it's a loss for the people who can benefit from this work and we have people whose life could be saved by it."

The full documentary on Maté's controversial treatment will be aired on The Nature of Things on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. He will also be on CBC Radio's The Current on Thursday, which starts at 8:37 am. ET.

This is so shitty - we must stand up to the pharmacratic inquisition however we can! Dr. Mate's book is on my list, and he is in my thoughts - how can we flip this ugly thing over and work towards ensuring that inspired health care providers have access to this medicine?

I read this earlier today.

This news is kinda sad really. When will governments around the world realize the potential that certain entheogens have in helping people conquer their addiction?. People in the UK who are hooked on heroin can get a methadone script within a day if they want (free of charge), but to get into an iboga treatment center it costs about £2,500. What heroin addict will be able to afford that?

Methadone also has a really low success rate here in the UK. It's at something like 10%, which is nothing when considering the amount of people on it. Here's an article explaining how doctors (in Britain at least) cash in on methadone treatments. Sucks big time.

health canada is a joke for one.. and it has been no secret for those in the know for a while now about Gabor Mate's use of ayahuasca to help addicits in the downtown eastside. I had a best friend who's mother was/is addicted to crack and alcohol and living down there she was in therapy with him, and planning on drinking ayahuasca. I dont believe for a second that health canada was not already aware of this. They just dont like it now that more people might know about it and wonder why they have not tried to make this sort of treatment more available to help cure the sickness of addiction that plagues this city.

I guess heath canada is afraid that some money is going to be lost here by someone down the road when all these opiate addicts can get off methadone. Dont be fooled. Health cananda does not give a ___ about anyone here that is addicted to opiates. All they care about is being able to maintain these people with methadone at the "safe injection site"..where they are the drug peddlers and not someone else on the street. With ibogaine readily available and legal here, and people running aya ceremonies health cananda must be frightened that if moer people know about this some big pharma company is going to loose money in methadone sales.

I have lived In vancouvber for 27 years..my whole life. I live right downtown and I see it every day. This is one of the owrst cities you will ever come to for homelessness and drug addiction. Not a day goes by where I dont see these people pushing shopping carts down the alleyway behind my apartment, jumping in the garbage cans for food or overdosing in the park etc..it is a part of life here it seems and these medicines are the best bet we have, and health cananda knows that becasue noone else has had anywhere near the success that thoe who work with these medicines have.

From what I was told, by another man who was filming a documentary on addiction in the downtown eastside and knows Gabor Mate, Mate is no currandero and does not run ceremonies anyway. He just believes in the potential of ayahuasca. There are other people who are involved in that who fly the currandero that they apprenticed to between canada and peru. I am unsure as to how they can prosecute Gabor Mate as he is not brewing ayahausca, serving ayahuasca or acting as head maestro in ceremony etc...This is all from my second hand account though.
