Hi,

Swim is currently traking 5HTP 100mg per day. he was wondering if there is any chance of the amplification of the 5HTp already in his system if he were to use Caapi extract, should he wait until the 5HTP levels have normalised? also does anyone know anyone who has used 5HTP in greatly reduced doses in conjunction with MAOI such that it is still efficacious without causing serotonin syndrome?

Thanks in advance.

Quote:
5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) syndrome is a dangerous condition of 5-HT excess that can occur during co-administration of a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor and an antidepressant. We investigated the effects of acute administration of MAO inhibitors and subchronic administration of tricyclic and heterocyclic antidepressants, and a serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) on 5-HT syndrome in rats treated with 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). The irreversible and non-selective MAO inhibitor pargyline, and the reversible and selective MAO-A inhibitor clorgyline, produced increases in 5-HT syndrome in the 5-HTP-treated rats, while subchronic co-administration of imipramine partly intensified and partly attenuated the syndrome, whereas milnacipran only attenuated the syndrome. Co-administration of mianserin partly intensified and partly attenuated the syndrome but the attenuating effect was dominant. Administration of the irreversible and selective MAO-B inhibitor selegiline did not produce any increase in 5-HT syndrome in the 5-HTP-treated rats, compared with the saline control. These data suggest that non-selective MAO and selective MAO-A inhibitors can induce 5-HT syndrome in humans when co-administered with antidepressants. Furthermore, the risk of 5-HT syndrome may be lower with the selective MAO-B inhibitor selegiline.

Probably want to wait a day or two - at least.

Yh was thinking that, but the 5HTp doses really get me through my day, not taking it would be intolerable. Cant help but notice that the serotonin syndrome symptoms pretty accurately describe a person on MDMA, im wondering if there is a huge difference between the two? still best to play it safe probably.

It is possible you might get serotonin syndrome, so I don't think any doctor would recommend taking that combination. However, I've taken harmalas (4g of Syrian Rue) with 50mg 5htp. Other times it's 4g of rue with 500mg l-tryptophan. No side effects at all.

I have had SS symptoms from taking high doses of harmalas with DMT. However, some people have suggested that harmala + dmt does not actually cause serotonin syndrome, but the symptoms from this combo are the result of the same receptors being activated that serotonin activate, the the symptoms are not from serotonin itself. DMT is a serotonin agonist.

Anyway, I would merely advise caution. If you wish to take this combo, just start with low doses and see how it feels. I think there is definitely a risk of serotonin syndrome in high doses of harmalas + 5htp, but probably not at low doses, in my unprofessional opinion.

Its a potentially risky combination, as a1phas quote alludes to. 5HTP has a half-life of around 90 minutes when taken alone so waiting for 24 hours between ingesting this and RIMAs should be fine.
I am paranoid of my brain. It thinks all the time, even when I'm asleep. My thoughts assail me. Murderous lechers they are. Thought is the assassin of thought. Like a man stabbing himself with one hand while the other hand tries to stop the blade. Like an explosion that destroys the detonator. I am paranoid of my brain. It makes me unsettled and ill at ease. Makes me chase my tail, freezes my eyes and shuts me down. Watches me. Eats my head. It destroys me.

Ok I'm going to take the unpopular opinino here.

If your dose of 5HTP is reasonable...100mgs or so you will be fine.

IN FACT. I find 100mgs of haramals followed by 100mgs of HTP to be quite euphoric/relaxing. I've done it several times to no ill effect what so ever. In fact sometimes I'll drink a cup of St. John's Wort afterwards as well. I find the low dose of all three synergies quite well.

The danger is that you could grossly elevate levels of serotonin and give yourself serotonin syndrome, but I bet you would have to take a gram of 5HTP and several hundred mgs of haramals. Remember all psychedelics raise serotonin levels as well . In order to suffer serotonin syndrome you would need to have them raised very high for an extended period of time. And even if you did this most likely it would be a mild case of serotonin syndrome and you would only suffer a bad headache for a few hours until your bodies MAO system restored balance.

You can EASILY take 5HTP or Tryptophan the day after a huge dose of harmalas and be fine.

Peace

Ive been dosing micro doses of caapi tea with 200mg 5-htp for a few days now.
So far no issues but is this really stupid?

Im trying to get through a depressive mind state and both medicines seem to help me out.
