For those of you who didn't catch it, Brian from Family Guy ate some mushrooms in the new episode and had a pretty harrowing experience Very happy

I saw that. Just seeing the bag of shrooms brought me anxiety Laughing I like how he says you take them to feel happy and then gets his ass kicked by them. A large lesson about any psychedelic with shrooms in particular in regards to myself.

Sadly I don't think that people have interpreted it that way, Global.

I felt the entire time the same way I normally do when jokes about people freaking out come around; although the creators may have intended only good in making fun of bad trips, the basic general view presented seems to be that taking mushrooms means psychologically you'll be terrified.

I chuckled at parts, but I think if this joke was intended to enlighten people on the ridiculous stereotypes society holds on psychedelics, it back-fired and merely reinforced those very stereotypes.

If you know the history of the show, they tend to make fun of everything they can think of. The more shock value the better. I took the message as if you take psychedelics for fun or to just 'pass the time' you'll usually end up regretting it Smile

Im pretty sure family guy have done good trip scenes so maybe they're just showing a balance, after all tripping can go good and bad.

That's the way you two perceive it as, what of the other few million?

T.V. just isn't worth watching in general anymore.

I do agree when he cuts his ear off, it does paint a rather negative image, but I try and find the positive in what I watch, and a program is too hard to fit into that perspective then I just don't watch it. I don't watch too much t.v. at all anymore, but I've always liked Family Guy and seem to agree with much of what they say (or what they're trying to say if satire gets in the way of direct interpretation)

Anyone who has done mushrooms knows that is nothing like what Family Guy portrayed it as. I was laughing about as hard as the first time I ever took mushrooms. I like when Brian completely dissolves into the void and survives his onslaught. LAUGHED MY FUCKING ASS OFF Smile

One of the more amusing trip scenes I have seen - a bit more in depth than this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aP2GY3HVLE8 I do love some of the Simpsons trip scenes though, Homer doing a spot of toad licking never ceases to have me in creases Very happy

Since when were psychedelics not fun or a good way of passing the time?! I find them to be excellent on both counts Laughing

When did you ever find TV worth watching? If you think the shows today are bad, they were only worse before.

I mean, Knight Rider would have been cancelled before the pilot if it had been made in the last 5 years.

Try watching a good, well written show before writing off the entire medium. (Breaking Bad, The Borgias etc.)

Judging all of TV by one of Seth McFarlane's flights of fancy would be like judging all of film from watching a Harold & Kumar flick.

That said, I enjoyed the psychedelic animation of Brian's trip. The ear cutting and freaking out were annoying, but to be expected for the shock value if you know the show's humor. At least, in the end, he became the empathetic and insightful one who was totally calm in the midst of the family drama that was gripping everyone else. He had that wise knowingness that people have after coming out the other side of such journeys.

Also, it seemed to me that a lot of the negative direction his trip took was due to the evil influence of Stewie. Stewie is pretty much the black-hearted evil genius character on the show.
"Curiouser and curiouser..." ~ Alice

Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." ~ Buddha

No, unfortunately, I don't think it will. I figured while I was watching the show, that the only way the censors would allow drug use portrayal is if they portray the drugs in a negative way. I'm sure there is some kind of stipulation that doesn't allow illegal things to be encouraged in any way. However, I don't think it matters that Brian had a nightmarish trip, or that they portrayed mushrooms very inaccurately. I think a lot of young people would look at that and think, "That looks awesome! I want to have nightmares and get fucked up too." I think that silly video will in fact inspire quite a few people to try mushrooms, except they'll be trying them for the wrong reasons. They'll be trying it to see how fucked up they get and how crazy their thoughts get. As someone else said, I think the video just reinforces negative stereotypes, and will perpetuate them further. I don't know what Mcfarland's intention was with the video. He doesn't care about any other stereotypes though, so I guess I shouldn't expect drugs to be exempt. After all, the reality of mushrooms, as far as we're concerned, isn't really funny, and nearly impossible to express. So if there was an accurate portrayal, it probably wouldn't have been funny enough for a comedy show..... and probably would come off preachy anyway. At least it wasn't the common hippie stereotype garbage.

Yeah, that's what I thought as I watched it. I thought, "figures, they're portraying psychedelics as deliriants that will make you see things that aren't there, and have you talking non sense, and self mutilating". But I guess it's not surprising. Comedy shows, propaganda, will basically portray ANY drug as a deliriant that make people have "real hallucinations", and do any number of insane, nonsensical, often times, not very funny things. His dream seemed barely psychedelic, it was just hellish.

I thought the portrayal of the psychedelic effects were way off the mark, however, I think they did portray the physical effects accurately (except in hindsight, I'm a bit surprised they didn't make Brian go through an epic purge). His pupils dialated, then he tiptoed out of the room to be alone, then he started shaking on the floor, got tired and went in to dream land. When he woke up, he seemed really serene.

I thought it was funny when Stewie said, "I think I'm getting a context high".

Breaking Bad is sooooooo good!!!! Can't wait for the last episode of the season to air.

I have to agree with TV having some good shows these days. 'Game of Thrones' being another great series. There is a LOT of crap too, but that's why the internet is so good. You can pick and choose what shows to watch, without the doom of interrupting adverts.

The quality of certain series varies greatly, especially between generations, but right now in today's normal broadcasting are too many advertisements (and subliminal messaging) within the show and between segments during breaks, and that's what turns me off.

What a "good" show is to someone is subjective and varies between people, while you might think those shows are decent, others believe them to be trash not worth their time.

I'm writing off the entire medium because of the methods surrounding bringing people the entertainment they seemingly need to pull them away from reality. Methods that I do not agree with, the reasons I think T.V. is a waste of my time. Others can do what-ever they want, but the point of this thread isn't to debate television in general:

Kronas wrote:

The point I'm making relates to those who haven't ever taken psychedelics, who do not know from experience what happens, those who do not view it as a joke, those who instead take it seriously.

Laughing at ourselves and what we do is a necessity in my mind, but its not worth it if people aren't taking it as a joke.
