Wouldn't the vapor escape the top of the test tube unless it was sealed with something like foil?
It may be hard not to burn the spice, some people have issues when using a crack/meth pipe and this looks like the same idea.

good question, you should start inhaling as soon as fumes come out. ventilation will come from the top of the tube.

This set-up looks OK, but certainly not amazing. I'm sure that it will work (just as vaping off aluminium or the crack/meth pipes does work) but it sure needs good, fine-tuned technique to produce consistent results. Some people can just do it and can use this (or similar methods) with great success, others just opt for set-ups that are far more fool-proof.

So basically it's worth trying and it's up to you to decide how good that is.
