Nice looking plant!

I started the summer off with one about the size of the one in your first pic. I now have 6 fully rooted plants.

On the advice of fractal enchantment, I left em outside in the shade all summer long. They love the PNW summer aire! lol They are now indoors for the winter in a window that gets sun most of the day.

When the conditions are right the really grow fast.

Mine are still outside and still growing alot..I try to bring them in at the very last minute becasue they just like it alot more outdoors..probabily bring them in within the next week or so.

wahoo those are nice as usual Gibran!!! I am impressed how they look so healthy. Just received mine a few weeks ago and they are kind of vegetating and get brown tips on the leaves (maybe the soil is too packed?...) without growing so much, I'm kind of scared to loose them but hope they will make it as it's getting cold now... They are indoor in the PNW too... Don't know if I should put them right by the window or leave them in a corner of the room, she seems really tricky to grow at least for some people...

no not too cold quite yet..im in a very mild temperate climate. if you go down to any of the beaches here you will see that they are all lined wtih palm trees that survive even through the winter..yes palm trees in canada..there are palms all over vancouver..so it is not really anything like the rest of canada here. Salvia is fine until it drops cold enough for a frost to come one night..

ah ah so cool!! I guess I spent too much time down south and have to get used to the not so cold night that are coming...;-) Thanks fractal that's really hopefull to grow more stuff outside from tropical places without fear of loosing them then, palm trees from seeds man, simply incredible!!

gibran2, what kind of soil do you use? Anyone out there know what the ideal soil ph is for salvia?

I use “Miracle Grow Moisture Control Potting Mix”. I’ve tried other soils, and find this one to be perfect for salvia. (Don't know the pH.)

The plant is now 2 months post-transplant. With the days getting shorter, the growth rate is slowing, but it's still growing at a good rate.

To get a sense of the size of the plant look at it relative to the pot it's in.

I recently moved, and it seems my plant likes its new home. It is continuing to grow nicely, although slower than it would in mid-summer light.

I have a question. I have noticed that there are many very tiny flies on the plants and also some leaves got a bit brown on the edges. I am a bit worried. Any advice a how to get rid of those flies ? Or is this normal ? What should I do ?

Flies and gnats, depending on the type, may cause damage to the plant’s leaves and/or roots. I use an insecticide spray that is safe for food crops when I get such infestations, and it’s usually very effective.


Yes, that’s my favorite too.

I bought spray ( Organic Bug Free) today and already used it so will see if it works, hope it will. I have also put garlic cloves on the top of the soil as I was advised by my friend. So I hope this combination will solve the problem.

For how long period of time should I keep using the spray ?

Follow label directions to determine how much and how often to apply. My experience with gnats is that they live in/on the soil, so make sure you spray the soil surface.

The plant is now 44" tall. It's growing more slowly due to shorter days, but seems very healthy. It has 6 branches, so its leaves aren't record-setting size, but some are already 12" long.

I think I'll let it keep on growing for another month or so.

I harvested the plant. Due to the short days and cooler temps., its growth had practically stopped. I took 3 cuttings and got what I’m guessing will be 40-50g dried leaf. (I’ll report the yield once the leaves have dried.)

The plant hasn’t grown much at all recently, so I probably could have harvested about 3 weeks ago and would have had a similar yield.

So there you have it. The full life-cycle of one of my salvia plants, from cutting to harvested leaves in 3-4 months.
