MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It's a drug even some narcotics officers in East Tennessee have never heard of.

That's until Hamblen County investigators found it manufactured in a Morristown neighborhood.

Dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, is a hallucinogen, like LSD or acid that provides a quick high. And unfortunately, like meth, it's easy to make in your kitchen or even on the go.

Clinton Lee Hale, 38, was arrested on Halifax Circle Thursday on a host of charges, including the manufacture of a schedule one drug. Now investigators worry about where they'll see it next.

"It's the first time for us," said Chief Deputy Wayne Mize with the Hamblen County Sheriff's Office.

"It's an ecstasy type drug. Hallucinations. Visions. Color shifting. Also vomiting, diarrhea, all kinds of side effects of it," he said.

Dimethyltryptamine can be found in nature, but this snowflake like stuff is produced synthetically. It's smoked, sniffed or injected for a high that goes quick -- only about 30 minutes, known as a "businessman's trip."

"It is extremely powerful. And why it hasn't caught on before now, I can't guess. Because it's a very strong drug," said Mize.

University of Tennessee Police Department Capt. Keith Lambert says there's one case he remembers: In 2007, two UT students were arrested for producing DMT in a dorm room.

Neil Morgenstern, resident agent in charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's Knoxville office, says he's never prosecuted a case for it here in East Tennessee. But he knows its potent stuff, a hit of about 1/4 a gram, costs $25 a pop.

"It's something that we'll instruct our officers to be on the lookout for. Because of the type of product that it is, it's easily disguised and overlooked, unless you know what to look for," said Mize.

Mize says Hale was producing DMT in a simple way, much like shake and bake meth.

"We are going to learn as much as possible about the drug, the distribution, because it is new to us and we expect to find more," he said.

Because investigators know so little about it, Mize says they'll clean it up in full contamination suits like they would a meth lab.

It's amazing how much misinformation our "Intelligence" agencies spew out. A quarter of a gram per hit? Really?
I feel sorry for anyone who trusts the DEA's dosage info and tries that.

Too bad they couldn't have a good defense pointing out all the ignorance and misinformation the police use and present in these cases. Maybe in America 100 years ago that would work, but now a days you get arrested for ignorant laws, tried by jurors made ignorant by our legal system/judges, and get convicted on shoddy evidence poorly researched and misrepresented.

What ever happened to logic and reason in the legal system?

In a society in which nearly everybody is dominated by somebody else's mind or by a disembodied mind, it becomes increasingly difficult to learn the truth about the activities of governments and corporations, about the quality or value of products, or about the health of one's own place and economy.
In such a society, also, our private economies will depend less upon the private ownership of real, usable property, and more upon property that is institutional and abstract, beyond individual control, such as money, insurance policies, certificates of deposit, stocks, etc. And as our private economies become more abstract, the mutual, free helps and pleasures of family and community life will be supplanted by a kind of displaced citizenship and by commerce with impersonal and self-interested suppliers...
The great enemy of freedom is the alignment of political power with wealth. This alignment destroys the commonwealth - that is, the natural wealth of localities and the local economies of household, neighborhood, and community - and so destroys democracy, of which the commonwealth is the foundation and practical means.” - Wendell Berry
