Hello all and thanks to all of you who have helped SWIM in the past through the chat. Your advice is always held in the highest respect and greatly appreciated as well.
Recently SWIM has been trying to grow some ultra pure glass spice but is having trouble removing the yellow. SWIM has recrystallized quite successfully in the past resulting in pure white spice but it has always been with smaller amounts 1-2 gr. With more recent attempts it has been around 7 gr. SWIM has enjoyed all grades of spice over the years orange, dark yellow, yellow, light yellow, cream, and pure white. They are all nice and have something amazing to offer. But for purposes of SWIM's latest experiments he wants clear shard. Anyway swim is having trouble and cant seem to get the yellow out. Every time the spice is heated in a NPS by placing in a water bath the NPS ends up yellow and there is a orange/yellow oil on bottom. SWIM should mention two NPS's have been tried both napatha and bestine and both end up yellowish. SWIM has also tried removing the oil as well as letting everything slow cool and separating later. But end result material always still has yellow although perhaps slightly less. Furthermore lots of attempts with hot/cold techniques have been tried to cause yellow to drop out of solution with little success. The ratio of NPS being used to gram of spice is approximately 30ml/1gr SWIM has also experimented with this ratio as well +/- 10ml. SWIM cant figure out what the problem is and why he has been successful in the past with small amounts from the same MHRB (powdered). SWIM has a few questions though.
1) If storing MHRB can the spice inside oxidize over time? If so would it lead to spice that is permanently yellow to some degree? (Swims MHRB has been stored but kept sealed and dry in a dark place for a little less than a year)
2) If you get solution of NPS and spice to hot during recrystallization can/will this cause spice to oxidize while in solution? If so what temp should not be exceeded and what is the ideal temp?
Any input is appreciated.
