Anyone have any xp with this? i´m thinking about ordering a few big ones but don´t wan´t to eat them anytime soon.

Do i need rooting powder or are they generally ok to root without it?

If your cuttings have completely dried on the ends where they are cut to the point where they form a hard crust surface, then they are fine to root. This generally takes 1 to 2 weeks after cutting them. Once this occurs, they can be placed in totally dry soil. A few inches should do the trick.

In a week or two after this, uproot the cactus to check to see if it has rooted. It will mold if you put it in wet soil, so make sure it is dry. If it has rooted, and you see no mold, then it is ready for light watering. Just give it a little every once and a while. If you over-water, it will rot.

I've never had to use a rooting hormone for cacti.

I use a mix of 1:1 agricultural sand to potting soil.

The dryer the better.

The idea is to make the cacti go looking for water so dry soils encourage adventure. After 2 weeks they should have some pretty good looking tentacles sticking out the bottom.

It's really easy Smile

Can´t wait to get my babies home Smile

Ive only eaten dried cacti but i can imagine it´s alot more special having a big one at home for a few months and caring for it before harversting the goddies.

I´m also getting some seeds to go with it to starta little plantation.

I live in the wet south and recently used sulphur powder to speed up drying times. It seemed to work very well. Like spoooky fast.

unsolicited advice: buy your seeds from someplace reputable

you don't want to "waste" your time growing a weak pedro ...when his stronger brothers don't take any more effort.
