So I was with my girlfriend at the Muir Woods just above SF today we came upon a huge patch of these mushrooms. Ive never picked mushrooms so I wanted to get these identified so that I can begin to learn my area and how to identify myself.

Pretty sure these are Mycena fagetorum (non-edible) based on a photo comparison.

Cap: Conical with strong, wart-shaped umbo; dark-greyish-brown, with lighter margin, gills make translucent margin striped; 1.5cm in diameter
Gills: White or light grey.
Spores: White
Stem: Greyish-brown; smooth, hollow, felted at base
Flesh: Smells mealy
Habitat & Distribution: In large groups and often in clusters, on beech litter; not frequent.
The trees spoke to me through the wind. The more I listened, the more they spoke.

Definetly a mycena of some type.

What about these ones, same area, same day. I dont have a pic of where I found them but they were growing on the base and side of a moss covered tree, very damp because of the fog. Hope that is enough info.

I'm not sure what those are but instead of harvesting all of the mushrooms you find, just take pics for identification and go back later and get the ones with positive ID's.

I'm sure the mushrooms don't appreciate being pulled from their homes just to be thrown away. Let them live so they can do their thing.

hehe right onVery happy Muir Woods is a lovely place, i've been there a couple times. I've also seen many mushrooms there that look like a strain of reishi, turkey tail, and other similar looking shrooms. they have many health and medicinal benefical, so perhaps you should look for those as well when u head up there again.

Yes I am already looking for a guide to bring with me next time I go. Like I said I am doing this for a learning experience so at least Im not going around picking everything I thought looked cool. I picked a few that I thought might possibly be edible. But I do agree that it was a waist and I will let them be from now on.

Sorry, can't help you with these ones. Quite a few look like these. Most of these little brown mushrooms are non-edible/poisonous though. It doesn't look particularly magical anyway ;-)
