Hello friends. I purchased two 15-year-old slow-grown peyote plants a while ago with the maliciously evil intent of ingesting them. They have been in a pot for about a year as I was waiting for the right time. The other day a neighborhood cat uprooted and chewed on one of them (the cats have attacked my bridgesii monstrose too ) and I'm moving soon so I figure now is the right time to commit such a blatant criminal act as consuming them. The thing is: there is nowhere near enough material with just the buttons for an experience. With the roots there would be enough material but I'm confused as to whether they are actually psychoactive or not. I remember reading somewhere that the roots are perhaps half as potent as the buttons and now I'm seeing literature that says the roots contain no mescaline. Does anyone have personal experience with ingesting the roots??? dragon-n attached the following image(s): peyote pups 2.jpg (79kb) downloaded 204 time(s).

No, you'll not get anything from the roots. Just cut them leaving a few mm of green button and re plant. As the roots are well developed you will be surprised how quickly they come back. You'll likely get several heads come from each plant as well. May as well keep 'em for another time! Also, if you don't have enough for a trip, why cut them now? Oh great - the world has just been replaced by elf machinery. Sic transit gloria mundi

The reason I'm being hasty about it is because I'm not going to be taking my cacti with me where I'm moving to. So it's either I leave them behind and never eat them or try what I can to eat them now. They are already 15 years old, so if I waited for these two plants to produce a trip I'll probably be 458 years old by then!!! oh well....

If you put the 2 buttons (no roots) on a blender and blend with water and some other fruit (for the taste) they will definetly give more effect than taking bites on them. two 15 year old buttons should definetly give a trip if blended. just drink the WHOLE thing and DO NOT THROW UP!!! I am with those man who own that particular kind of courage of the interior voyager.

Quote: The alkaloid content appears to be highest at the top of the cactus, with the top half of the button reportedly somewhat more potent than the bottom half. The alkaloid content of fresh roots is approximately one quarter that of fresh whole buttons/tops. It is considered inappropriate to harvest and consume the roots because a root can regrow a new button after a button is harvested.

Thanks for this. I'm going to assume, but not claim, that this caries over to San Pedro and Peruvian torch like cacti as well. If your religion, faith, devotion, or self proclaimed spirituality is not directly leading to an increase in kindness, empathy, compassion and tolerance for others then you have been misled.

Yes the roots are active, different forms of the species also have different activity both for tops and roots, the average potency is low, actually less than what is known for decent average San Pedro and there is every indication that San Pedro cacti can be every bit as potent as the most potent of peyote, when you have the right strain and know how to care for it (don't stress it, feed it well, give it tons of light, water it plenty)
The NAC has a rather high demand for root tea, it is active and asked for and this reality poses a threat to populations that are harvested for the NAC. At least one study found that roots differed chemically from tops in that they can in some cases contain more hordenine and can have different ratios of alkaloids than tops. In some plants roots are weaker than tops but this is not a hard and fast rule, if any rule is hard and fast it is that the online consensus regarding these plants is typically misinformed or at best outdated. The experts seem to avoid sharing any information online and the cutting edge of online info is years behind the real cutting edge of this matter, so to speak. There is a cult of secrecy regarding this matter, it means you really cannot take what you are told as fact, what people believe is seldom true, it all tends to be opinion or be based upon limited data and very poor studies that had no interest in factual accuracy.
