I just got my second notice from census canada reminding me to fill out my form since "it's the law"..it said that on the front of the big yellow envelope they sent it in..apparently I am being warned lol..3 months in jail and $500 is the maximum sentence..

Anyway it turns out an american company that makes weapons was contracted out to take the census..and then they sell it off to advertisers so they can send us more junk mail..both an invasion of personal privacy and a horrible waste of paper. I am a criminal now according to canadian law for not filling this out, and I strongly encourage any canadians here to join me Smile

I am not american. I am not an item on somebodies shelf either..it is not the business of some american company to probe me about my life, nor is it the business of the canadian government to try to use fear of prison sentences and fines to make me tell them things that are none of they're damn business.
Long live the unwoke.

They do the same shit in New Zealand, Its crazy jail for not filling out a questionnaire though I never fill it out and only ever received the warnings they never take it further. Here its also against the law to not be enrolled to vote.
Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be,
reaching out to me, lets me see.
There is so much more and it beckons me to look though to these,
infinite possibilities.
As below so above and beyond I imagine,
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

"The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: Is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey - don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride." - Bill Hicks

So let me get this straight:

You are outraged that should you fill out the census forms, Lockheed Martin MAY know (in fact, they don't)

1) how many people live under your roof
2) what their relation to you is
3) how old you are and how old those who are living under your roof are

??

Are you a regular user of the internet? Are you on facebook? Any other social networking sites? A member of any forums? Holder of a gmail account?

If so, they may easily know way more about you than what a census might tell them. All you are doing, frankly, is inhibiting the society you live in from ascertaining crucial information about their population (age and geographical distribution) in order to function properly as a government. (I know, I know, you side with those who think all governments are the same and that voting is a waste of time...) Rolling eyes

i love ya to death fractal, but come on, this is leaning dangerously close to conspiracy theory. Just a little research reveals that Lockheed Martin amass the data and hand it over to census Canada and that ONLY census Canada employees are permitted to see the census imnformation (not that it is even CLOSE to being volatile, as intel goes...Wink ) And ya, you can say "that's what they SAY", but I'd love to see some proof otherwise. And the work is actually going to (and has gone to since 2004) the Canadian subsidiary of Lockheed Martin (Canadians employed by Canadians). If you have real credible sources that suggest otherwise, I am more than interested - that site you linked could have been posted by anyone inclined to discredit either LM or Canada or someone simply predisposed to rabble rousing or with a predilection for anti-establishment conspiracy theory.

If there is anything to rant about here, it is simply business - and the irony of a company diversifying from creating instruments that destroy populations to employing instruments to count populations. The irony is thick, but that doesn't make it a conspiracy. Just another day at the market...

Anyway i am 42, my son 2 and my GF 35 and we all live under the same roof. Other than my address, you now have all the information census Canada has on me, and that LM allegedly may one day have.

I still feel safe.

But I do not have a gmail account.Very happy

I agree with jbark on this. The only issue I have with the census is the "race" question. By the way I'm a U.S. citizen and I don't know if the Canadian census asks that question but they do here. I think everyone should fill in "Human" for your race!

Can I just say that I don't get the draw to this show at all? I watched the first two seasons and found no appeal whatsoever. I only slogged through it cuz I know tons of people who literally will not shut up about how funny it is...Wut?

The only parties with a legitimate grievance with the practice of national census-taking are the government agencies who have been scammed into believing such an antiquated and inaccurate method of data collection is a worthwhile expense, and the poor saps at post office who are charged with shipping all that useless dead tree matter around.

It's the 21st century. Some random working peasant in a call centre in India can bring up 99% accurate info on every aspect of your life at the press of a button, based simply on your age, credit history and post code.
Sometimes I believe that this less material life is our truer life, and that our vain presence on the terraqueous globe is itself the secondary or merely virtual phenomenon.

I'm not canadian, but I loooove trailer park boys Laughing Back on-topic, I know it's against the law to not take the census in America, but I don't know of the reprecussions for not doing so, beyond the fact that they will eventually show up at your door, ask 10 questions or so and leave.

Also, gotta point out, and I was literally talking about this yesterday, that the first two seasons are the worse ones. They're particularly slow. Show really starts to pick up after that though (I know it sounds like I'm lying, but I'm not lol)

Laughing See, that's what I was told about the first 3-4 episodes, then about the first season, then about some of the second season...perhaps you're right, maybe I'll give a few of the later episodes a scattered shot when I get a moment.

One thing that hasnโ€™t been mentioned yet (at least I didnโ€™t see it) is why nations have a census in the first place? Census data is used to ensure that local communities are properly represented at a national level (politically), and very often national resources (financial, services, infrastructure, etc.) are distributed to communities based on population and other demographic data.

If a community is under-represented, thatโ€™s not good for the community: The community wonโ€™t get its fair share of national resources.

Haha, I hope you can find the joy and humor in the show that my friends and I did.

RE: the census

It's funny, I was thinking about this on the bus ride to work this morning. They have one of those signs asking people to please send in their census forms. I was caught off guard by the thought of how sad it is that libertarians and other conservatives in the US act proud of not submitting their census information. Not speaking to fractal's motivations at all, and I have nothing but respect for him, but these people who wear civic disengagement as a badge of honor seem so childish to me. Like what their really screaming is, "no one tells me what to do!"

I'm sure that I'm speaking to myself here, as much as anyone else, for truly my civic engagement doesn't go very far beyond participating in the neighborhood group (look out for each others pets when they get away, notify each other about break-ins and organize litter clean-ups) and trying to put in informed votes for local elections.

RE: Trailer Park Boys, watch the first movie, as it's like the highlights of a really good season. If you don't like it, then the show's not for you.

He said he doesn't want to do the census because he doesn't like the weapons sponsor. Also, he doesn't like the idea that of being forced and threatened if he doesn't take the census.

Well, I guess itโ€™s a choice that must be made: Either be counted by the census and indirectly help your community (and help the weapons-sponsoring, census-taking company), or refuse to be counted and indirectly harm your community. Whatโ€™s right? Whatโ€™s wrong? Thatโ€™s for each of us to weigh and decide.

Hehe, this, along with the religion question is the bit I enjoy most! Being a bit of a cocktail I have fun clicking most of the boxes for race, my mother has defined herself as a world person or something. I donโ€™t know how flexible your forms are in your country thoughโ€ฆ

I have a far harder time with the religion section as I am not religious at all but I like to create interesting definitions for my beliefs.
