I work in mental health professionally and used to work when i was younger in a psyche ward.
I've been really interested in herbal alternatives to psychiatric medicine and I've done some research into original plant sources from commonly used medications today.
Respirine originates from Indian snake root :Rauwolfia Serpentina
http://en.m.wikipedia.or...iki/Rauwolfia_serpentina
Being a natural product from a plant American pharmaceutical companies can't make as much money on it so they developed respirdol/respirdone. An effective antipsychotic.
Respirine is effective and naturally occurring in snake root.
Ghandi utilized snake root as a sort of sedative. It has low toxicity, and my theory is that a cup of snake root tea or a tincture could be an effective way to get some one out of the often traumatic bad trip/trainwrecks we all
Know and love so well.

Another possible plant is the ghost pipe or Indian pipe or corpse plant : Monotropa uniflora
This plant is really interesting to swim because it is just fascinating! It was used as an opium substitue in the old days and has salicylic acid in it among other things and it's been shown to have antiepileptic effects. Antiepileptic drugs are often used as antipsychotic drugs. An herbalist and teacher of naturopathy recently used it on some one with what I assume was meth induced psychosis on some strange guy who happened onto his property. A little net search on this one and you will find it.'
I believe that this could be effective as well in bring some one down if needed. At least I couldn't hurt and it's also fairly nontoxic.

These are some good plants I think to explore and do some home work on because they could come in very handy for those moments where a guest or your self end up
Flying off the deep end for 8 hours screaming a choose life like terrified monkey at the top of their lungs! Seen it scary..
I don't want to say bad trips are not educational and important or something to ignore or get rid of, but temporary drug induced psychosis is dangerous and swims seen people have to be restrained as well as people attempt to harm themselves and others in these hard trips.

Swim recent read of a over dose on erowid of 5meoace-dmt and he took a respirdone and was down fairly quickly...
http://www.erowid.org/experiences/exp.php?ID=58167

I think it's worth exploring these and having them available especially at festivals and events where lots of drugs are taken. Offering some one a nice cup of tea that makes you come down is just a nice thing to do for
Some one who's suffering from drug induced psychosis...

My experience is, the most efficient way to terminate a psychedelic terror ride is a couple of mg of Clonazepam, a benzodiazapien. 4mg, is what I use, may be too much for some people, maybe not enough for others. I weigh 220lbs.I place two of the white chalky semi sweet tablets under my tounge and within 20 minutes everything becomes manageable, 40 minutes and "I'm good to go".

Xanax works just as well.

My experience with this benzo is that there are no harmful interactions when using it with maoi found in rue or caapi.

I understand you were looking for herbal alternatives. I'm not sure an herb with antipsychotic properties is exactly what you are looking for.

Anxiety/panic is what causes the bulk of the problems when having a bad trip. Nothing knocks that out as well as a good benzo.

if your looking for an herb that terminates a bad trip, I would look at something with strong anti-anxiety properties.

Panic and anxiety attacks do happen and benzos of coarse can help, temporary drug induced psychosis is some what different, and I think as the guy in the ACE-dmt overdose points out the antipsychotics can interupt the actual effects of the drug in the system not just the anxiety created by the drugs effects.

My advice would be to really look into it and study it before even considering experimentation. For example try a google search on..lets say reserpine and LSD. Have a look at the mode of action of reserpine, that could provide clues on what can be done or what cant be done.

For example pre-treating with reserpine might enhance LSD's effects! Reserpine binds to VMAT and some neurotransmitters cannot be transported to the synaptic cleft, hence being left for degradation in the cytoplasm. As a result the nerve cells get depleted from certain neurotransmitters : this could increase LSD's effects by "removing" the competition of the native ligand for 5HT receptors.

All im saying is that it needs thorough research and consideration: maybe a herbal tea of such kind to calm down those freaking out is further away than originally thought.

i doubt that this would do anything to kill the trip but maybe to fall asleep if having trouble at the end of a session of something stimulating such as LSD; Benadryl? i always took this as a kid to help with alergies and to help me go to sleep when i was having trouble. so i just took one to go to sleep on my back because i have come to a habit of sleeping in a ball on my side which is agrivating my hip and back horribly.

just an idea from someone who took two twenty minutes ago and is feeling slightly more tired already.

Reserpine is no longer used in the UK but it did have a role as a centrally-acting antihypertensive agent. It has quite a long list of potential side-effects including depression.

I agree with Ice House that benzodiazepines (although not natural) are probably the best first-line agents to deal with a bad trip;clonazepam 2-4mg should be sufficient.I personally prefer lorazepam (ativan) because the boat-shaped little blue tablets as made by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals can be taken sublingually and kick in within 15 minutes.1mg lorazepam is equivalent to 10mg diazepam so 1-2mg sublingually should be sufficient. These drugs are also safe with MAOIs.

Another agent to consider which apparently works is niacin (nicotinic acid, a vitamin of the B class);it can cause facial flushing which some people find disconcerting but this is not an hazardous effect.Aldous Huxley refers to the use of niacin in this regards in 'Doors of Perception/Heaven and Hell'.

I think if someone is having proper psychotic symptoms then a benzo with an anti-psychotic would be in order. The end-of-the-line antipsychotic clozapine (ie for use when all others have failed) can potentially be hazardous with MAOIs but the others such as chlorpromazine/haloperidol/risperidone/olanzapine etc are ok with MAOIs.
I am paranoid of my brain. It thinks all the time, even when I'm asleep. My thoughts assail me. Murderous lechers they are. Thought is the assassin of thought. Like a man stabbing himself with one hand while the other hand tries to stop the blade. Like an explosion that destroys the detonator. I am paranoid of my brain. It makes me unsettled and ill at ease. Makes me chase my tail, freezes my eyes and shuts me down. Watches me. Eats my head. It destroys me.
