After acid boils and sitting for 24 hrs there was lots of remaining bark sediment. The liquid was filtered and then reduced. Instead of continuing onto a defat, there was no time, so the reduced liquid was transferred to a flask and left to sit.

There was no formation of a film during reducing (volume went from ~1600 ml to 800ml).

Its been about 24 hrs now and there seems to be a redish sediment on the bottom of the flask. It looks very similar to the sediment after the acid boils and is presumably root bark that came through the filter. However, one wants to make sure its ok to filter.

Any thoughts on what should be done?
Filter?
Leave it in?
Get better filters? (haha)

Thanks in advance

Sounds like very very fine bark powder, it usually cant be filtered out and needs to settle in the fridge overnight if possuble.

yeah I would say filter and/or do a sodium carb wash

good luck and tell us how it went!

Edit: Forget what I said, for some reason I read wrong and thought it was in the solvent...

yeah you can filter or just leave, no problem

You can filter it...personally, I don't think it matters if you leave it in; I have done so in the past without problems. At the pH you'll be basing to, such fine particles should be dissolved. Just make sure it's jet black after basing and you'll be fine.
