If one had a particularly violent purge from ayahuasca this may also cause some issues

What I wonder is, are there any POSITIVE effects from drinking Caapi during pregnancy? The mother's diet is SO critically important...

For example, greater levels of melatonin lead to a longer the window of critical development of the brain before puberty. Considering the shocking decline in age of puberty--which is, essentially, hormonal regression--I think any and every avenue to avert this regression/decline as a species should be explored. Diet is EVERYTHING. A processed diet even grossly impacts a child's dental formation. All of this has to do with the hormones in food either supporting or sabotaging the way our DNA is read. No one can argue there is a skyrocketing amount of developmental disorders afflicting our youth.

Plant chemicals affect development POSITIVELY, and considering the powerful and positive effects of Ayahuasca, I can't help but wonder if something like controlled microdosing could have beneficial effects?

My interest in this is not "I CAN'T STOP DOING DRUGS FOR A FEW MONTHS, OMG," but rather, taking all the data available to me as far as developmental biology is concerned and providing the best environment possible.

Since when has microwaving machine-processed chemical creations in a BPA-laden bottle become the socially acceptable alternative to breastfeeding? TV dinners and candy bars are legal.

I am in no way advocating jumping off the deep end and doing anything crazy before any conclusive work is done--the last thing anyone should ever do is cause any harm to another living being. But, at the same time, we are causing ourselves and each other a ton of harm already, and we should explore every option available to reverse the damage we've done. A living, plant-based diet trumps any other diet, especially from a neuroprotective standpoint. This makes me wonder if Caapi, too, could play a role in restoring a more nourishing developmental environment.

(Some thoughts inspired by Minxx's favorite book, Left in the Dark, highly recommended reading about plant hormones impacting DNA and development. Smile )

I think, it is more than just irresponsible!
One should respect the child in every step of its developement!

That being said, I'm still against recommending extreme diets that don't consist of the full spectrum of real foods for a pregnant women.

Nice Dune reference blue_velvet.

This topic is interesting nonetheless, as there is speculation that a fetus may be flooded with DMT at 49 days after conception and also at the time of birth. If this is true then what could be the effects of a fetus experiencing additional DMT? Maybe it already does... If our bodies produce any amount of it endogenously that is.

Evolutionary Developmental Biology for the Developmentally Retarded

Edit: Also, please take the link in context and read the entire thing, or don't bother commenting. There are some serious points that are totally logically worth addressing, and not extreme at all. Looking at the increase in all kinds of developmental disorders and health problems in children, I think it's very extreme NOT to address our current situation.

Eat some meat if you like. Do what works for you. It doesn't change the fact that the brain needs a ton of raw, plant-based nutrition, regardless of whether you choose to eat meat or not. The body concentrates Vitamin C 100x around the brain vs. the rest of the body, and you're not going to get any vitamin C from meat. Primates get as much as 4-6g of vitamin C in the wild, and what is the RDA set at for humans? 45mg? Barely enough to prevent disease?

My point is, plants are important and we should consider all options without bias... in interest of the well-being of our future. I want my children to thrive. That's all. That's why I do what I do.

And following that train of logic, that's why I posed the question. Okay? Smile

I think this whole thread should be deleted. Put a note in the wiki: do not smoke dmt while pregnant. Is anything else really necessary? There's no research on smoking dmt while pregnant, so there's no reason to support it. Might as well be safe and not experiment while pregnant. If someone decides otherwise, that's their choice and possibly affecting their child. But I don't think the nexus should support smoking dmt while pregnant in any way.

As this would be a serious discussion in the sense of somebody asking: "can i do this?", i think most of us would say "better safe then sorry"...meaning "no".

But if i correctly understood the OP this was more a theorethical question.

-Recently there was a thread on the nexus on the interference between DMT and progesteron. I believe it was posted by infundibulum.
-I also believe that the classic hallucinogens cause contractions of the uterus. I even believe i've read somewhere that some derivates of lysergic acid where used in midievel times to cause abortions.

So i would say that it would most definately be a risk at the early stage of pregnancy and that later on in time the risk of miscariage as a result of chemically induced contractions of the uterus diminishes.
But then there still are other riskfactors like the unknown oestrogen-factor and the fact that a small amount of DMT for us, may be an extremely large amount for the infant's develloping brain.

I'm almost sure that it will increase the risk of all kinds of CNS conditions you don't want: every second, the baby's brain is producing neural connections that will be VITAL later on in life. DMT diminishes the activity of the serotonergic system by a mechanism called downregulation: by stimulating the 5-ht-2 receptor it makes the brain think it's serotonin levels are too high and it will decrease the amount of serotonin receptors and activity that involves serotonin.

This downregulation is temporal for grown adults, but how it is for an undevelloped brain or how it would affect the proces of making neural connections, slowing it down maybe...

I would say this are good reasons to believe it could do damage.

A bit out of context isnt it?..like a cheap shot in the dark becasue you dont really have any refernce to what this sopposed diet devoid of "real foods" is..but hey, cheap shots are great arent they?..

I think what he's saying is calorie dense food. Growing a baby takes alot of energy, and retrieving those calories from a slice of pizza is alot more convenient in todays fast paced world than munching on plants all day waiting for them to digest with all the complex carbs and what not.

The sublime, immensely intricate and multi-faceted embryological processes that occur particularly in the first 2 trimesters is such that taking any exogenous substance such as DMT could conceivably have effects which may only become apparent at some point after the neonatal period and for this reason I would say 'Just say No!!'Stop
I am paranoid of my brain. It thinks all the time, even when I'm asleep. My thoughts assail me. Murderous lechers they are. Thought is the assassin of thought. Like a man stabbing himself with one hand while the other hand tries to stop the blade. Like an explosion that destroys the detonator. I am paranoid of my brain. It makes me unsettled and ill at ease. Makes me chase my tail, freezes my eyes and shuts me down. Watches me. Eats my head. It destroys me.

My bad. I define real food as in food that existed in nature (plus dairy for me personally). Ergo anything that comes in wrap isn't food. Also food musn't be heavily processed to fit this criteria (hexane and soy, yo). I also don't think grains are an essential part of the human diet since we have evolved without them.

Thank you for that study in advance. Especially about the RAW PLANT part. On the other hand I do believe that if, in a certain timeframe (gut flora needs new bacteria), a person would decided to go completely raw and based his diet on meat, sea food and plants (little and selected vegetables though since oddly they don't want to eaten and therefore use all kind of tricks to prevent us from consumption), he would be in good health.

I also want my (actually I want that for all the kids) children to thrive but I can't see that happening on a plant-based diet especially if it's full of whole grains. It's could totally be the ego thing but I really believe that nutrition is a HUGE factor in terms of life quality and therefore I quickly jump when people make claims and "facts".

Sorry, Shaolin, I really don't even think we're understanding each other at all. Where, when, did I ever say anything about grains? I'm talking about fruit... primate food... and all the other incidental bits of a primate diet. That's as close to anything in nature that I can possible think of, IMHO.

And I posted you a link about fruit and development.

That some people do something without negative effects doesn't proof that there isn't an increased likelyhood of some problems.

There are reasons enough to assume that the chances of doing some kind of damage is very real. It may not be a 100% chance, but i think every pregnant woman would want the chances of a healthy baby to be as big as possible.

Smoking during pregnancy also doesn't ensure your kids will suffer from some health problem, but it's clear enough chances of it are dramatically increased.

My main fear would be... DMT is a neurotransmitter so if the fetus' brain wasn't developed enough to handle it, that it might short circuit something somewhere.

On the other hand... If the fetus' brain can handle it, it seems like it would only help it in the long run by building more neural connections.

I've read some reports and had some personal healing experiences where it seems like the DNA is seemingly being repaired or modified somehow. It seems to me like if this is indeed the case, that it could possibly help the human evolution process since that fetus is already "hard-wired" to enter those sacred realms before birth. If the parents were to continue the child's education with some sort of meditation practice, I could see some possible benefits for that child.

This is all speculation of course... I have no idea what's really going on when I'm on DMT... Much less how it would affect a mother/child relationship.

It is just as likely to decrease the amount of neural connections. DMT is indeed a receptor agonist, but it's effect is clearly a diminished serotonergic activity as brainscans reveal.

Taking a substance that DOWNregulates the amount of serotonin receptors in a brain that has yet to build all of it's neural connections, in a period of rapid devellopment where normally every second neural connections are being build that are vital for it's later functioning, could likely lead to LESS neural connections.

You also have to see that indian tribal society's are not like ours. Our society may be a lot more stressfull.

If you've got less serotonin receptors you're more susceptible to depressions and compulsive disorders like anorexia, but in society's where ayahuasca is a part of life, there may be less social stress that could accumulate to having those disorders, so having less serotonin receptors could maybe stay unnoticed in those society's. And those people take ayahuasca as well throughout their life, compensating with it's antidepressant effect maybe, the lesser amount of receptors they may have.

People always say that DMT is a 5ht-receptor agonist, assuming that that means more neural activity. But in the case of DMT it clearly means LESS neural activity in the neo-cortex. You can clearly see that on brainscans.

I dont think there is any evidence at all of seratonin down regulation with the use of ayahuasca. Ayahuasca is not DMT. I dont see the relevance to the natives using ayahuasca in relation to these brainscan studies of people on DMT. Caapi is shown to upregulate seratonin receptors..
