Due to a remark in this post by endlessness stating "who says harmalas dont dissolve in acetone?" and of course me in this post stating "...and the harmalas refuse to dissolve in it" we had a question that needed to be answered.

Luckily stubbornness can be overcome so I started this test to see if harmala-freebase can be dissolved in acetone.

THE STARTING AMOUNT OF HARMALA-FREEBASE

Amount: 0.5g harmala freebase, extracted from Syrian rue with the use of IPA and phosphoric acid.

We start with 0.5g of harmala freebase, extracted from Syrian rue

The harmala-freebase in the glass

And a nice close up of the harmala-freebase

ADDING ACETONE TO THE HARMALA-FREEBASE

Amount: 50ml acetone

The harmala freebase after the acetone was added, notice the coloring of the acetone

A shot from above to see the color of the acetone after it was poured over the harmala-freebase and stirred well

The temperature is 25C (did you know that chicken needed the highest temperature?)

THE AMOUNT LEFT AFTER DECANTING THE ACETONE AND DRYING THE SOLIDS

Note: After the solids settled at the bottom of the glass the acetone was decanted and discarded.

We are left with an amount of only 0.3g, so we lost 0.2g in this test

Just a very small amount of the harmala-freebase could not be scraped from the glass

The results speak for itself:

* We started with fairly clean harmala-freebase.
* After adding the acetone to the harmala-freebase it got colored.
* We started with 0.5g and we ended with 0.3g. This means that 0.2g was dissolved in 50ml of acetone.

Conclusion:
* 50ml of acetone can dissolve about 200mg of fairly clean harmala-freebase.
* endlessness was correct with questioning the statement that harmala-freebase could not be dissolved in acetone.

If anyone has anything to say about this, please let it be known in this thread.

Kind regards,

The Traveler
