I just read shulgin identified 6 compounds he considered special, but noticed they are all phenethylamines from phikal, does anyone know if he also settled on a magical list from thikal?

I'm pretty sure there's about 8 from pihkal and 5 from tihkal: DMT, Psilocin, Ibogaine, LSD, and 5-MEO-DMT.

Shulgin is not a big fan of tryptamines. I own PiHhKAL and TiHKAL. PiHKAL is well written and makes all his favorite phenethylamines look fabulous despite the fact that most people don't like them much. Most people prefer tryptamines over phenethylamines, however his book TiHKAL makes you think tryptamines are pretty horrible compounds.

If you read his section on LSD in TiHKAL and compare that to his section on mescaline in PiHhKAL, you’ll see what I mean. He makes mescaline seem like the best thing in the world and pretty much glosses over LSD in TiHKAL. In the section on LSD there isn’t a single trip report. You would think maybe a word from Dr. Leary, Mr. Hofmann, etc., but there’s nothing interesting to read of it. It’s a big disappointment.

He’s obviously slanted in favor of phenethylamines and seems to dislike nearly all the tryptamines from what I’ve read in his book.

I was vastly disappointed when I bought TiHKAL. I thought PiHhKAL was an excellent book. I found most of the information in TiHKAL to be very inaccurate. I found the trip reports to be a collection of some of the worst possible trip reports you can find. He tried hard to find all those bad trip reports he used in that book. I don’t know what his motive is.

I think maybe he feels a little jealous that most of his phenethylamine creations have not been big hits on the drug scene. Albert Hofmann’s LSD overshadowed everything he ever created. Whenever people run across his creations on blotter paper they are usually pretty upset. A few people like them, but the majority prefer LSD and the other tryptamines over his creations.

On a side note, Shulgin did NOT invent MDMA, but a lot of people think he did. Most of the psychedelic drugs that have killed people were invented by Shulgin: DOB, DOM, 2C-T-7, etc. To this day LSD has killed no one. Every year you hear about deaths caused by one of the drugs invented by Shulgin. In general the tryptamines are far safer than the phenethylamines.

I think Shulgin feels that in his life he’s played second fiddle to Hofmann. Many look to Hofmann with almost God-like admiration from bringing LSD into the world. LSD had a huge impact on the entire world. Hofmann single handedly shifted the consciousness of millions of people by inventing LSD. And he did so by accident! Talk about dumb luck!

While Hofmann created LSD by accident, Shulgin has spent much his life specifically trying to make something as special as LSD, but has yet to succeed at it. Shulgin used mescaline as the bases for most of his creations. Had Shulgin focused his effort on the less toxic tryptamines instead, then maybe we’d have something better than LSD, psilocybin and DMT. If you do a poll you’ll find that the majority of psychedelic users like LSD, psilocybin and DMT more than any of Shulgin’s psychedelic creations.

My personal favorits Tihkal creations (not tryptamines in general but only those Sasha discovered) in order are:
4-ho-mipt
5-meo-mipt
4-aco-dmt
4-ho-dipt

Well, I don't have 5, only 4, but there they are.

I don't know what the deal with Shuglin and tryptamines are, I do enjoy some of his phen's, I just can't seem to get as deep as I can with tryptamines though.

4-aco-dmt is similar to 4-HO-DMT.

How would you rate those against the classics (DMT, psilocybin, mescaline and LSD)?

Shulgin didn't invent MDMA, but he was the first to synthesize it since WWI; which is still quite commendable, but he certainly never obtained the heights of St. Albert.

I think his negativity toward tryptamines is possibly due to his angle of approach. I have to wonder just how thoroughly he really explored the tryptamines. Just imagine if a true DMT devotee were granted Shulgin's resources.

Honestly I don't think shulgin gives two shits about how well his droogs are doing in the public besides his dislike for how they are abused. He does what he does, i think, to find different molecular tools to better understand the human mind.
I've read tihkal, and apart from the trip reports, I think the actual book part was very very good and I never got the impression that he was trying to make trypts to look bad.
A lot of his trip reports were written by him and his wife, and different people react to different drug types differently than others.

Personally I can see how shulgin views mescaline over acid though.
I hope that scientists aren't so self-conscious as to care much how their creations fare in the drug world, and do it instead for the sake of exploring new tools.

but damn...way off topic

Of the trypts I've tried so far:
1. DMT
2. 5-MeO-DMT
3. LSA's
4. psilocin
5. LSD
6. 5-meo-dipt (I really dont like this one much but ive only tried 6 different ones)

I think one can’t help but to feel responsible for the effects of their creations in the world. Look as the book “LSD: My Problem Child” by Hofmann. The title says it all. At one level Hofmann felt bad for being responsible in some way for its abuse and the many problems it’s caused world wide. But at another level he was quite proud of the positive impact LSD has had.

Like Hofmann, Shulgin’s creations have also caused lots of problems in the world. However, some of Shulgin’s creations carry a far darker price than Hofmann’s LSD. Unlike Hofmann’s LSD, many of Shulgin’s creations have actually killed people.

Back onto the subject.

SWIM has tried the following chemicals from PiHKAL created by Shulgin:

1. DOM (STP)
2. DOB
3. DOI

That’s it. No more. SWIM hated all of them with a passion! Tripping for 3 days straight while tired out of your mind and not being able to sleep is NO FUN AT ALL! He’ll never do them again!

SWIM’s only favorite from PiHKAL:

1. Mescaline

SWIM’s top favorites from TiHKAL are all 100% natural except LSD:

1. 5-HO-DMT (bufotenine freebase smoked)
2. 5-MeO-DMT (taken sublingually as the fumaric salt)
3. DMT N-Oxide (smoked)
4. Psilocybin (orally)
5. LSD (sublingually/orally)
6. LSA (converted to LSH with mint and taken in small doses orally)
7. DMT (orally with harmine)

What's the difference in effect of smoked DMT N-Oxide or smoked N,N-DMT?

Smoked DMT N-Oxide has a slower onset, longer peak, and longer duration. It’s not as “psychedelic” as DMT but still extremely visual. It’s less fat soluble than DMT, so it’s also weaker. SWIM likes it more because it lasts a little longer and produces less “mind fuck” than regular DMT.

Also, while DMT is specifically illegal it most countries, DMT N-oxide is not scheduled in any country that I am aware of. In fact I know of one place that sells DMT N-oxide (pure as deliquescent crystals) at 10 mg for about $140! That’s not even enough for one hit! You’ve got to be a millionaire to afford that kind of pricing! WOW!
