I've recently been interested in THH, especially after reading 69ron's breakdown of the different harmala effects. So I began to scour the forums for tek's to either extract or convert to get THH as a final pure product. This came after the disappointing news that FV THH is not quite 90% pure haha!
I would have posted this in the extraction section, but I'm still a n00b and don't have full site privileges. Still gotta write my intro essay (it's currently in the works, I like to be thorough! ^_^ ). ANYHOW, to the point, and I hope some senior members notice this post.
Here's the deal, I have some of FV "THH" available - which would be 80% harmne. Additionally, I have access to AMALGAM! Amalgam usually contains zinc, and most of the THH conversion steps have called for a reducing agent - zinc being one of them, which makes sense why amalgam may be used in the reaction.
However, if I am to attempt this, I would need some more guidance, which is why I'm hoping for some more detailed help from some of the senior members who have already discussed this greatly (like Soulfood, noubuoni, Infundibulum, etc).

From what I've read zinc might be able to convert harmaline to THH but certainly not harmine. As I understood it, harmine is very hard to reduce. Kind regards, The Travaler

I wonder if anyone has ever tried to reduce harmaline/harmine with LAH, it should be an order of magnitude more efficient than with zinc/magnesium/iron/lithium/carbon... Unofortunately Lithium Aluminium Hydride is on the watchlist. The Dutch IRS asks every company that deals in that substance to report suspicious sales. They literaly call this 'drug precursors'. However, for LAH it's not stated how much sales per year is suspicious (for acetone it's 50kg :shock . Also, 69ron is not very credible when he talks (not anymore, he's left the forum) about the effects of various substances. Plus, 69ron most likely never tried pure THH. Well, it could probably still be purchased safely from china/india in small quantities. However I wonder why FV didn't use LAH since harmalas are legal. If I understand correctly LAH is even stronger as sodium borohydride ("LAH is the more powerful reducing agent than sodium borohydride due to the weaker Al-H bond compared to the B-H bond" link). I did some more research, and that article may have been talking about SODIUM amalgam. Sodium amalgam (NaHg) is apparently one of the strongest reducing agents, seems like one should be able to find it at chem supply stores. The amalgam SWIM has access to is "dental amalgam" which is silver + mercury alloy, the silver portion contains bunch of other metals including zinc. Not sure if it would be a good reducing agent though.
