To all who don't like seeing the banner:
Install Adblock plus (for firefox) and block the image.

Well, if it entails a lot of work for the guy programming the site, then sure, screw multiple banners...

Wow, those new banners look fabulous. SWIM believes that banner should be based on nature and have a more visually appealing color scheme. SWIM believes this would make the site look more welcoming and homely.

These are just SWIM's views.

It doesn't, but traveller is probably justified in his concern about bandwith. Although If there are 10 banners in the carousel, It's not a tenfold increase in bandwidth since everyone would download them once and once only. I think that might be acceptable but I don't know the numbers.

@JBark: it's been like that for a few years, so, thought it was time for a change.

harder better faster stronger newer ?
I just thought with the ample talent on the art/literature forum that someone would be able to come up with something better (perhaps, truer to the experience) than the lovely pink/blue thing we've got at the moment.

We are getting better every day. Not always is a revolution needed, sometimes evolution will do just fine. Pleased

Is this really such an important issue? The traveler does a bang up job running and maintaining this site, has designed a fantastic looking banner, and we're trying to burden him with further programming duties to have alternating/user-choice banners so we can personalize our DMT NEXUS experience?

Maybe I am in a minority here in not considering this a particularly pressing or important issue, but I can well imagine the traveler has his hands quite full already and is, I am sure, juggling all sorts of problems and conflicts of which we will never be aware and which allow this site to continue unhindered and unencumbered.

I thought this was an important perspective to bring to the discussion. Again, we are a community, and if I am the only voice for this perspective, i'll gladly STFU!!Smile

Ash - those are great looking banners BTW. I do have to admit I have grown quite fond of the current one however, and would be a little sad to see it replaced.

But - I ain't awefreed 'O a lil chaynje, needer!!

You grossly misunderstand the technicalities in changing an image. It's as simple as changing the name of a file, or if the filename's the same between the new and the old, replacing the file on the server. It would take 10 seconds. Literally. 10 seconds. Especially if the image dimensions are the same. If they're not, 15 seconds maybe.

EDIT:

I likes it.

EDIT2: Also, if you don't clear your cache that often, you can simply overwrite the file in your cache with your own. I'm sure there're programs / plugins that'll let you do this automatically along with custom CSS layouts too.

Methinks you haven't read the whole thread. I am not a programmer but I think either setting up a menu for people to choose one among many to personalize their banner experience, or having many banners that alternate in the banner space takes considerably longer than 15 seconds.Smile

And methinks to say that I "grossly misunderstand the technicalities in changing an image" might be a little strong in the hyperbole department.Smile

My point was that the Traveler, the mods and even the general community surely have more important issues to attend to and bigger fish to fry. It's kinda like, IMHO, an entire thread of back and forths discussing what shirt to wear on a rainy monday.

Again, I repeat though, if this be the will of the community, I will be more than happy to STFU!Very happy

Maybe, if possible, we could have a collection of banners? The current one is good, but maybe someone could fix up a way for a different banner to show at different times? That way, you get a bit of freshness everytime.

Jeez, Ash, you just proved we should have a banner contest. I wouldn't say yours can fully replace the current one, but it can be used as a banner set. Maybe we should have different banners for each forum, with the current one as the index page banner...

In the same way that the theme can be changed you could go into your profile
and change which banner to use.

If you'd reread the thread you would see my posts all over the place, and could easily deduct that I HAVE read the thread.

And i had read your post, but it is still work, regardless. It ain't a five minute fix. But AGAIN, if I am in the minority then so be it. I just kinda like the banner, and it would cripple me on my phone (if we had a series), that i use when out of town to stay in touch with y'all...

anyway nuff sed.

happy 1500 posts shoe. Very happy

I blatantly ignored the banner roulette suggestion (I read the whole thread). At the very least, the banner could be changed, which I believe is an optimal solution. I think my gripe with the current one is disproportionate stretching and the color palette. A little variety wouldn't hurt, but rotating banners seems frivolous. Yes, I like using big words.k

Your excess of grandiose verbiage is of utmost superfluity. Rolling eyes Razz

I like the colors, the layers, the way it resonates with my own experience... Whatever banner we end up with should be like the image on the front of a travel brochure to say, "Come and visit SPICE!"

My take on how the banner should look like, I blended the old with the new, then I spiced it up.
