I think that angela merkel said those things about muslim immigrants to prevent right-wing populists to hijack the german government: houses of parliament in all countries surrounding germany are being terrorised by rightwing nuts who systematically manage to get 10 to 20% of all votes, and recently an important figure in german politic's published a book that's meant to prove that all muslims are retarded.

I think angela merkell wanted to prevent this dude from forming a new political party with as sole issue the anti-immigration agenda.
She has to say this, so rightwing nut's cannot blame her for being 'ignorant' about 'how terrible all these muslim-immigrants are'.

I think she actually made a smart move there and that she didn't mean it that way.

It's like when a democrat want's to run for president against a republican: he would have to say that he isn't afraid to drop a nuclear warhead on iran, to prevent someone who would actually want to drop nuclear warheads all over the place from becoming president. It doesn't nessecarily mean that he realy would want to start armagedon, he just has to say that he isn't afraid of doing it so nobody will acuse him of being a weak coward, being weak, being a pacifist..... being like a european.
