I've been fiddling around with DMT for a little while now, with several successful extractions and many great trips, but a minute ago I saw something unexpected. I was doing STB with naphtha from Mimosa hostilis, and had gotten to the point where I was letting it freeze-precipitate... some of it had already precipitated when I realized that I had forgotten to do my sodium carbonate wash. So I thought, why not redissolve the spice by heating and shaking, and then washing it with sodium carb and then freeze precipitate. I've done that once before, and it worked just fine. But just now, as I was (very gently) heating the naphtha/DMT by placing my sep funnel in a pot of warm water, I pretty much immediately saw a weird black smoke-like substance appear within the naphtha. After some shaking, it disappeared, and I went on to do my sodium carb wash. It is now in the freezer and tomorrow I'll be able to assess yield. But in the meantime, can anyone explain the black wispy stuff?? It was only spice and naphtha, and the black wispy stuff appeared with the application of only a small amount of heat.
