It stands for the nitrogens. There are two nitrogens in DMT. So thats why its NN. It depends on the nomenclature used whether or not you word it that way. But whatever just chemical jargon.

Cheers! Been wondering about that for a while. It's used so often but I've never seen it explained.

Gotta disagree here; Very happy NN stands for the positions of methyl groups on the dmt molecule. dimethyltryptamine means that it is a tryptamine with 2 methyl groups. One "N" means that one of the methyl group is on the nitrogen of the tryptamine's molecule and the other "N" says that the second methyl group is on the same nitrogen molecule.

If you had just one methyl group it would be N-methyltryptamine (NMT) or if (hypothetically) you had three methyls (on the same nitrogen of the ethanolamine arm) it would be NNN-trimethyltryptamine.

Thanks for clearing that up and sorry for misinterpreting it Pleased I was wondering why they didn't use NN for tryptamine and stuff like that.

I'm pretty sure it signifies the positions of the 2 methyl groups

Huh? 5-MeO-DMT is short for 5-methoxy-dimethyltryptamine, which means a dimethyltryptamine with a methoxy-group at position 5. DMT doesn't have any methoxy groups.

Location: Not separate from the rest of the universe. So, everywhere.
If you wanted, you could call it 5-MeO-N,N-dimethyltryptamine to indicate that the methyl groups are on the amine nitrogen.
