my friend asked the following be posted for him: does anyone have any ideas on what type of stores i could go to to find Sodium Carbonate locally? i looked online and can find good prices but they all seem to charge a lot on shipping. Buy baking soda consisting of nothing but sodium bicarbonate, heat an hour in the oven at 400 F/205 C, and voila - you now have sodium carbonate!  The heat will release CO2, so the baking soda will loose around a third of its weight. Good luck!

Heating sodium bicarbonate at 350*F for a few hours will produce sodium carbonate.

will it be very impure though? its just my friend is using it to wash his nonpolar pulls and doesnt want to leave any contaminants in the end product. (may sound stupid, but this is the first time my friend has bothered to clean spice and he doesnt know a lot about washing and weak bases, etc.) thanks for the help! Nope, it will be totally pure if you use pure sodium bicarbonate. You may want to spread the sodium bicarbonate well out to be absolutely sure everything gets reduced. Personally, I like to give it 45 minutes in the oven, shaking it a bit and then give it 45 minutes more. You can check the weight afterwards to be sure, it should have been reduced by roughly a third.

I just bought Washing Soda crystals. They are available in pretty much every hardware shop, corner shop or supermarket (in the UK at least), for about 70p (1USD) Saves having to explain why you are baking a tray of Sodium Bicarbonate Oh great - the world has just been replaced by elf machinery.
