I am a bit divided.... I love football, specially playing it (of course, being a brazillian I had to fulfill the stereotype, right? hehe), but also watching good games. Its amazing how skilled some players can be. On the other hand im very critical of the whole 'football stars' thing, the media coverage it involves, the ridiculous exagerated salaries and advertising contracts the big players have, etc. I also find ridiculous how beast-like humans can be when they blindly identify with things such as teams or countries, all this nationalism and the agressive competitiveness it entices.

But.... the world cup is only once every 4 years, its an opportunity to watch some good games, so yes im gonna watch at least some games Razz My problem is I dont have TV. Does anybody know some live streaming page on the internet?

Yes I just ignore all those negative things and enjoy the football, im really against all the false nationalism nonsense and division but the world cup is only once every four years so I will enjoy the football, it does bring nations together to a certain extent. heres some streaming sites, theres loads out there, the iraq one has given some people viruses so ry the others first. ive never had a problem though and used it a lot in the past.

I have turned on the world cup at work. I am grossly interested in the USA v England tomorrow.

I am also looking forward to all the OTHER football matches Smile Im upset that they put brazil on some languish group that plays on the 15th... instead of having them play everywhere (<3 ronaldinho, does that make me a bad person??)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FOOTBALL!!!!!!!! I am such a hooligan for this awesome game. I went to the world cup in 94 when it was in america, I was a wee chap, and immediately fell in love with the game.

I
cannot
wait
for
this
to
start

only 10 more of my minutes they are walking out now!!!!!! SWEET!~
Lets go extract something together Smile

I'm Scottish but have lived in England for a long time. I hate it how all the Scotts, Welsh and Irish want to see England lose more than they want to see anyone else win. The worst part about it is that the English don't care - they would / will still support any other British Isles team before anyone else. It makes us Scotts look stupid IMO.

Still, it's all good and I'm looking forward to watching the game on sat night!!

Know what your saying but im not part of the anyone but england brigade, my mum supports england and my dad lives in england, he actually has english friends who want them to lose because of all the nonsense that goes with it. Im kinda torn with it for some reason, wouldnt mind them going on a good run but definately dont want them to win the thing!

In holland, every company has soccer-promo-actions wich are becoming more and more annoying. wherever you go, people trying to squeeze some extra money out of your pocket or to seduce you into buying more rubbish so you can get some useless soccer-gadget.

It has gotten to the point that i'm starting to believe nobody actually likes soccer, but they just have to watch it because the media tell them to. like if you don't watch football you're an outcast or something.

Is football that commercialized in brazil as well?

SA is ranked no.83 in the world and Mexico is no.17 i think, so SA did really well... I'm hoping that Brazil wins as they are the most skilled, they are also my favourite team. Yes there are a lot of negative points to The Fifa World Cup but i really love watching soccer as its such a highly skilled tactical sport, soccer's the only sport that i watch actually. I think soccer can be very unifying instead of dividing, it just depends on the way you look at it i guess. :b

I only watch the finals. I lack all competitive spirit so I usually don't give a fuck who wins or looses. So it's not much fun to watch a competitive game like football when you're like that Smile
But I can sometimes feel the spirit of others around while watching a game.
Last world cup I was living in London so it was fun to go to the local pubs and watch some games. Quite crazy when England was playing Smile Those britons are nutters Razz hehe

Amazing... So many posts already and nobody is talking about how much money has been spent on the games and not many dimes (if any) have been spent to improve the living conditions of the people who have to live in the slums of South Africa. And there are MANY people who are suffering due to poor living standards over there...

Ye, I shudder to think how much money has been spent, and how much more debt South Africa is getting into for this event.

but where has this money been spent? did you think about how a lot of money comes in through tourism, infrastructure development, all the local business and artisans and random market people that have increased incomes, plus at least some extra attention for NGOs that do work specifically with the poor people?

I do think this is important to question about what you are comenting on... But better try to not be black and white, and disconnectedly idealistic. As I mentioned before, I am critical and am sure others here also are of the exagerated salaries and generally unsustainable football 'consumerism'. But if the world cups are gonna happen anyway, isnt it better that they are made in poor countries to at least partially and temporarily bring some investment and attention? Of course ideally the social injustices would all be immediately solved, but unfortunately they are not. So what can we, like literally you and me, do about it? I guess thinking critically as we are trying to, is at least a start, right?
