I didn't check the links yet but for some nice fact: the highest temperature in our solar system was reached on Earth. The temperature was about 7 trillion degrees Fahrenheit and was reached in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider by colliding two gold ions.

I also think that Planck temperature is seen as the highest theoretically possible temperature.

But seriously, no matter what the outcome of the development of fusion, the acceleration of man's technological prowess is always exciting and potentially beneficial. The point about pursuing less expensive and more immediate methods solving our energy and environmental problems does ring true, however, but it's too bad that our economy so ass backwards that we can hardly afford to fund essential research, such as this. Anyway, I say damn it all and go for it!
