My best friend put himself into a coma this past St. Patrick's Day. He overdosed (drunk and high, oxy, k, and blow). This happened to him in general because he abused the gifts the universe has given him. He is slowly progressing. When I repeated om mani padme hum in his ear his head, neck, and the top of his shoulders jerked like he was fighting to wake up. Two days later I read him the prayer from the book of Jonah. As I expected he began to fight it. He grimaced and I could tell that I could turn this from a medical battle into a spiritual battle.

I am seeking advice on how to wake him up.

Wow man. That's a helluva potentially lethal cocktail. I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I've personally had a couple of friends in coma's, but they were from sports accidents. I'm sorry to say that I don't know of way to wake him up however, except for time. Coma's can be a way for the body to shut down all unnecessary functions, to heal what needs healing the most, so perhaps time is what is required.

I'm sorry I can't offer more help. I wish your friend a speedy recovery, and a life changing learning experience for the better. I don't know what else to say except you and your friend have best wishes for recovery...

Peace & health,
-idt

The Nail,

I also want to offer my deep condolences about this dreadful situation. I agree with idtravir that only time can resolve this. His body/spirit/soul will have to decide when to awaken. Keep providing the support that you can, . . . I am sure he is processing it on some level. . . but I would respectfully suggest that you not do anything more than you have been doing . . .

We are all pulling for you and your friend.

Peace & Love,
Pandora

The Nail,

I just stumbled across this on Wikipedia. Perhaps discuss this with his doctor:

Quote:
Coma

Zolpidem has recently been very strongly related to certain instances of patients in a minimally conscious coma state being brought to a fully conscious state. While it was initially given to these supposed permanent coma patients to put them to sleep, it actually brought them to a fully conscious state in which they were capable of communicating and interacting for the first time in years. CT scans have shown that the use of the drug actually does dramatically increase the activity in the frontal lobe of the brain in some patients in a minimally conscious state. Large-scale studies are currently being done to see whether it has the same universal effect on all or most patients in a minimally conscious state.[25] It may be that zolpidem's ability to stimulate the brain, particularly in the semi-comatose, may be related to one of its side-effects, which sometimes causes sleepwalking and other activity while asleep, that appears to observers to be fully conscious activity.

Good luck my friend

Intense combo, that's for sure. Best wishes go to you and your friend.
I think he can pull through. But it's going to take time. A necessary equalising period.

Music, play his favourite music to him. Or singing perhaps. That oughta activate something in him.

Another worthwhile thing would be the use of precious stones/crystals, such as amethyst, quartz, agate, carnelian, etc.
They are well known for their healing properties.

I can guarantee when he comes back his whole outlook on life will have changed.

My hart is with you, man. I agree with what's been said here: you and your friend will have to persevere for the time being. Don't give up yet. I think you're doing the right things.

I second the agreement to play HIS favorite types of music. Preferably a good mix of some slow, gentle songs, and also some upbeat and happy songs. Whether or not the medical staff says he's likely to hear it -- if they don't have fMRI or PET or something scanning for activity in his auditory centers, they don't really know whether or not he can hear it.

If you had good results with Om Mani Padme Hum, perhaps you could try whispering that to him more, and also Om Vajrasattva Hum and perhaps even the Medicine Buddha Mantra. But that's very much up to you, dependent partly on what you believe that mantras can or cannot do.

He can hear you, talk to him. I couldn't find the study Sad but I remember reading that positive outcomes have been proven in regards to people in comas being spoken to in soft, loving voices by family and friends.

But also be sure to take care of number one, yourself. As a nurse, I often see the emotional tax on the family/friends being a lot higher than that of the patient. Please take care of yourself!

My heart goes out to your friend, family/friends and you.

Much love!

I will pray for him tonight.

As for mantras, this healing mantra has helped me many times. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUJucA-mrgE . Just keep your intentions strong, and let the universe work it's magic.

Much love

don't.

coma is a process of repair, like error checking during a slow reboot of the brain. delta wave state.
just let him rest
