This type of shit makes my blood boil, anger is the appropriate response here, to my mind, as this was an attempt to stifle the spread of information and knowledge, short of rape/torture/murder I'm hard pressed to think of more heinous crimes. Has he done any work recently that could have specifically instigated someone to go after him? Obviously his career makes him a threat to the shadowy "they" but I'm curious if he's had any recent major breakthroughs/discoveries.

This also shows how important it is that rare and irreplaceable documents are digitised and stored in securely offsite. Information should also be shared wherever practicable. You can burn books but once the data is out there nothing can stop its dissemination.
