Would household ammonia (the stuff you can buy at the grocery store) be basic enough to work in an extraction?

Works just fine if using DCM but would work poorly with naphtha.

I would think it too weak a base to work for naphtha. DMT is not very soluable in naphtha, hence the high ph most people need to raise the soup to in order to get the DMT to move over to the NPS layer.

I don't know SWIM and personally don't trust him at all. If SWIM is posting, most likely I will not respond...as I said, I don't trust the guy. YOU I trust, but never SWIM.

Can SWIM use Chloroform in place of DCM?

Ammonia is commonly used in A/B extractions where chloroform or DCM is used. Most professional techs I've seen use it. Not many professional techs use solid bases like sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate.

SWIM, doesn’t like the odor. He has used it in the past and was happy with its performance.

If using the kind at the local supermarket, make sure it’s pure clear ammonia and not the sudsy kind with other things added to it.

If SWIM added the ammonia to an acidic solution containing DMT or other alkaloids should he expect to see clouds of precipitate?
I believe that this could be a good way to get a rough visual estimate of the amount of alkaloids in unknown plants (such as wild phalaris grass).

There are reagents you can use to field test for alkaloids, swim has lost his notes but one of the precursors is sodium nitrite so there's a starting point. Entheogen type forums will have more info.

Well would Ammonia work, SWIM is trying to work out a nice bulk tek for phalaris with reagents you can pick up at your local grocery and hardware store. And he thinks that if ammonia produces clouds of precipitate when it is added to an acidic, alkaloid containing solution it would be a good visual gauge for determining whether or not the grass is worth his time.

Thats not going to work unless you carry around a sep funnel and camp stove. Hardly a field test. Google for the proper reagents.

Would Toluene or Xylene pull the alkaloids from a solution that uses ammonia as the base? Or could SWIM add salt to the basic solution, to make it more polar?
