TL;DR is at the tail end of the post if you’re in a rush!

First off let me start by saying if and when I find a plant to harvest it will be done in a sustainable manner.

With that being said, after a few hours of research I’m pretty confused on what plants are a go and what plants are a no go. MHRB is out for me as it's not something I can get without ordering it online where I am (something I’m just not gonna mess with). Acacia is another one that probably won't work for me. I’m pretty sure I could probably get a tree/shrub from a nursery, however I don’t want to drop a ton of money on a younger tree/shrub just to kill for extraction. As I understand this is probably what would need to happen, and even if I didn't need to, I doubt it would last the winter here. The winters where I am precisely at are INCREDIBLY harsh for at best 2 months at worst closer to 5.

So (at least as I understand it) that leaves selecting one of the many types of grasses that contain DMT. I originally had settled on Reed Canary Grass (Phalaris arundinacea), as I can think of a dozen places I could easily find growing in the wild close to me. However after further review of the forum it looks like that's a bad idea due to the gramine in it. As I understand that makes it a no go for a first time extractor like myself.

So I’m at a point where I am lost. I don't love the idea of growing the grass myself (especially if I have to do it indoors). I’m willing to if it's my only option. I’m hoping someone can recommend a plant that can be found in the wild or one I am able to get in the ground outside within a week or 2 that will be ready to harvest in a few short months if I have to grow it myself (I understand that this is probably an impossible ask, but figured I’d ask anyway). If there's a plant I can find in the wild, all the better!

So I guess the TL;DR would be: What's the best grass and or plant that I can find naturally occurring in the NE USA? And or what grass/plant can I grow easily (inside or out) that I can use for extraction?

If any of the conclusions I’ve drawn above are incorrect please let me know!

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

You might want to look into one or more of the Desmanthus species like D.illinoiensis or, perhaps more promisingly, D. leptolobus. There's still a whole lot of work to be done on optimising both extraction methods and cultivation parameters for achieving anything remotely resembling a reliable yield with those species, however - but I wouldn't say it was significantly different from the place you'd be starting with if you wanted to work with Phalaris spp.

With the right indoor setup and the right seeds you may be able to find some level of success with something like P. brachystachys; as a novice to extraction you'd have to show a real commitment to understanding the ins-and-outs and basic principles of extraction science.

And speaking of indoor grows, have you considered trying mushroom cultivation? That might turn out to be a more straightforward route to success. (And psilocin = 4-OH-DMT.)

Yeah if you want to grow (or collect) outdoors and have harsh winters, Desmanthus might be your best bet.

With Mimosas and Acacias, you'd definitely have to grow them in pots and take inside for winter. I think it's possible to harvest some root bark without killing the tree, but you probably need a tree at least 2 or 3 years old to get a useful quantity of bark and DMT content 1% or higher.

Acacia acuminata is very promising from sustainability viewpoint, because it has DMT in the phyllodes. You can find seeds for cheap on ebay (narrow leaf is supposedly the most desirable), and while it's not super likely that they'll survive there, it may be worth a shot.

Desmanthus l. sounds the most promising. I'll definetly be keeping an eye out for them (and Phalaris) on my next hike out here. Would I be haresting and drying the whole plant? I assume yes?

As far as Phalaris, the fast that these plants containe gramine make me a little weary. Is this something that is easily taken care of with extraction?

I dont want to pick a plant where If im not very careful the final product can result in my seriosuly hurting myself or my friends.

Also on yeild. I cant imagine needing very much. I'd like to maybe have 1 beakthrough trip and sit on that experience at least for a few months. Long enough to maybe begin growing a plant that has a better yeild inside (or outside preferably). Do you think finding a decent amount (say 100-500grams once dried) in the wild would give me a decent enough yeild?

Edit: On mushroom cultivation. This is not something I've considered. What strains of mushrooms would you suggest?

Gramine is not soluble in naphtha, meaning an extraction procedure will easily remove it. You can't rely on just any old patch of wild Phalaris to contain anything like a measurable quantity of usable alkaloids, however - and the plants are subject to not only seasonal variations in alkaloid content but also variations in content depending on the time of day that it is harvested. Phalaris can be quite a work of dedication to building a relationship with the plant - at least that's what I've seen with the folks here who've worked with Phalaris over the years.

If you did have room for a small tree somewhere indoors over the winter Homo Trypens' suggestion of Acacia acuminata is a pretty good one. That would be a matter of tracking something down via seed merchants or plant nurseries. There's also the Share The Seeds (STS) forum that may occasionally have things of interest come up.

Edit: you might not get your vaping technique perfected in just one try so aiming for a single breakthrough amount - well, it would be very lucky if you succeeded in achieving that! As for mushrooms, take a look in the mushroom section of the forum. Most people start off by growing some variety of Psilocybe cubensis.
