Agreed. Sums it up for me. He used to be *soo* cool when he was younger. I idolized him. And he's been in so big movies. My theory about why he's gone lame is that he hasn't been in any big movies lately and he needs the attention, but that's not even it. Because now he wins lead actor.

My new theory is scientology. He and his wife are big supporters. They have brainwashed him into the cult and propped up his ego in who knows how many ways. He's not doing well mentally because of it. Doesn't mean I have sympathy for him.

The oscars are way overrated. Like so many of these awards. It has very little to do with artistic values.

I don't know the motives for why some artists get an award and others don't.
I suspect that commercial interests play a role, maybe the personal interests of some of the people who make out these juries as well.

But if it's not actually about the quality of the movies awarded anyway, it has little relevance. Even culturally, i think.
Will the movies that people still be watching and talking about 10 or 20 years from now, also be the movies that get the most awards? I don't know.

I don't actually think that's true, although it would possibly explain some things. They deny it, for what it's worth, and most Scientologists (celebs especially) are loud and proud about their affiliation.

Living where I do, I cross paths with Scientologists from time to time. It's a brutally toxic scam of epic fucking proportions, and I've seen the fallout firsthand from acquaintances who've taken the bait.




Commercial interests play a role in everything. I'd say most of the films and people involved who were nominated last night were pretty much deserving of the honor. It's subjective of course, and yes, the Oscars (and Grammys, most notably) can be embarrassingly out of touch, but that may also be because all of these governing bodies are made up mostly of old-as-shit white men.

I wonder how you have the self awareness to say things like this yet not enough to realize these same judgements apply to how you rule the forum with a fascist "I'll punch you in the face to prove I'm stronger than you" mentality.

B) Never once said anything like that to anyone on this forum. Well, no I take that back. If it was some guy that slapped someone down at the bar no one would give it more than a passing glance. I am ashamed to say that i watched slapgate more than a couple of times. I feel soiled by my recent celebrity voyeurism.
If it wasn't staged then Chris Rock took the slap very well. Oscars viewing was at an all time low last year and not much better this year. Reckon they'll do ok next year. The salad days are coming back for sure. It's just a shame that we find conflict and bad news so much more watchable and readable than things like fluffy bunnies. I wonder why that is...

It just struck me, honestly, because it was so utterly norm busting. You just don't expect to see a dude in his 50's losing control so monumentally in such a public venue.

Which still gives me a little suspicion that it was staged. One minute he's laughing at the joke, get's a dirty look off of the wife and then storms up and gives a rather theatrical slap, with an almost instant comeback off of Rock. How can you be laughing at a joke one minute and then hit someone for telling it seconds later? It all seems a bit to instantaneous for me. But yeah, maybe he is a man baby that thinks he can do what he wants from minute to minute as the mood takes him.

Couldn't be less bothered by the whole thing. The cynic in me is tempted to assume it was an empty grab at a fading spotlight and nothing else.

And I also couldn't care less if the production team was white, black, or bloody purple with green spots. The show still sucks becauses it's still a bunch of insufferable millionaires huffing their own farts. That's why the viewership has only been declining for years.

Yeah, I'm not going to say that you're wrong about the insufferable nature of it all. It's a fart sniffing bonanza. And in a way that's exactly what made it such a shocking moment. It was just such dramatic upending of accepted social norms, and in a setting designed specifically to bludgeon the world with its fanciness.

It's weird to me that the situation has occupied as much space in the national consciousness (as well as my own) as it has the last two days, but there's probably a sad commentary there about American life, as well as my own susceptibility to tabloid drama.

I think that maybe in america the slap had more of an impact than in other parts of the world.

Here in europe, with something happening nextdoor that could potentially escalate into a WW3, i believe it seems of relatively little significance to most people.

But i think it is quite normal and healthy even, to be shocked or offended by something like this. I mean, you have seen the guy on TV before and in various movies as well probably, so somewhere in your brain he is registered as a familiar face, someone you know.

Contrary to what Bill says, words aren't much different from actions in that actions are born of mental states and people show their mental states in everything they say AND do. Bill turns any possible conversation into a 'I'll smack you' dick meassuring competition, but since he's on the web he reasons 'but all I can do is ban you.'
