Hello, I am currently living in South America and read up on some of the different acacia's which may be psychoactive. It turns out that the acacia caven, which is said to potentially contain tryptamines, grows in my back yard and all over where I live. I would be interested to do an extraction but have a few questions:

What would be the best parts to harvest? On Wikipedia, it says that the "leaves of this (and/or other plants) and tobacco are occasionally smoked with Anadenanthera seeds for psychoactive effects". The caven is currently carrying many seed pods

When would be the best time of the year to harvest? The trees had been blooming a couple of weeks ago but have stopped now. It is currently summer and very dry.

How could I harvest it without killing or severely damaging the plant?

Is it worth attempting an extraction if the only information is on Wikipedia/dmt nexus and only states that it may contain psychoactives/tryptamines?

Also, I apologize if this is in the wrong section but I figured it is not a FAQ

Thanks

Also, the seed pods are apparently used for the tanning of leather as they contain tannin. I am not sure if that is relevant at all but upon quickly reading up what tannin is Wikipedia says that tannin "binds to and precipitates proteins and various other organic compounds including amino acids and alkaloids".

Edit: Nevermind I think this may be irrelevant

Hey Woolmer,

I know nothing about Acacia caven, but have some general considerations.

If you want to not hurt the tree much, the best thing to harvest would be leaves/phyllodes and smaller twigs. If the seed pods and/or seeds contain tryptamines, which is not impossible, that would be even better.

With bark, be it on the stem or roots, if you make a cut around/across, it can't heal, everything above the cut will die. If you cut a narrow stripe along, it can potentially heal with time. Never do it on the stem, do it on branches or roots. There is only one stem! If there are bark pieces coming off the stem by themselves, i don't see anything wrong with collecting those. I don't know if root bark heals - if not, it would be better to dig out an entire root branch and take all its bark, taking care not to hurt the rest of the root system.

If noone chimes in with information on this species, you could find out yourself by collecting a bit of each of these materials and running test extractions on them. Please report your findings if you do!
