I think it is relatively well known that mesoamericans performed enemas of alcoholic beverages to bypass first-pass metabolism. But they didn't just use alcoholic beverages! They used many plants from Ipomoea violacea, Brugmansia ceratocaula, Banisteriopsis caapi, Anadenanthera peregrina & colubrina, Nicotiana spp, and many others I have no doubt. Twisted Evil

Historically enemas were used as medical treatments of hemorrhoids, blood in the stool, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and others. Enemas were also a large part of shamanic practices, not just in mesoamerica but all over the world! It is well known the egyptians used enemas after observing the ibis, a bird in the family Threskiornithidae which is the symbolic animal of the shamanic god Thoth which supposedly inserts its tube-like beak into its own rectum and gives itself enemas.

I am making this post not just because I find this fascinating, but also because I see many-a-post on this forum and others on stomach complications arising from ingesting substances from opium, to Ipomoea species, ayahuasca, and bufotenin. I feel strongly that if we can first, destigmatize enemas--not that that is really prevalent on this forum Smile we can then solve some very real, and problematic issues with many drugs. Stomach discomfort ruining a trip, nausea purging the dose before it is absorbed well, and using less substance to achieve an equal level of intoxication. Cool

Now obviously there needs to be some words on safety, because enemas are so efficient at delivering drugs into the bloodstream it can be really easy to over-do it. This isn't necessarily a life-threatening problem with things such as DMT and others, but something like opium or even coffee could potentially put one at serious risk. Plants like Anadenanthera's and Ipomoea's could have other alkaloids and terpenes which could potentially cause issues, however they do have a history of human use which means something I think (granted Brugmansia and Datura have also been used). Enemas also have the problem of dehydrating the individual and imbalancing mineral content of one's body, sometimes to a lethal degree. You should ALWAYS drink a glass or two of water before performing and enema. Try and use sterilized distilled water, although it isn't necessary it will help prevent potential infections or radical changes in your mineral levels. Never use high or low pH fluids or other caustic liquids to avoid causing tissue damage to your colon and rectum.

I think that there is MUCH work to be done here, and many many new discoveries awaiting!!! The entheogenic value of a plant may present itself at one ROA (i.e. snuffing yopo/cebil or oral Ipomoea seed) however rectal absorption could greatly help and reduce nausea and stomach discomfort. More importantly I think, rectal could really be a method which brings out the spirit of a plant because of increased dose and the bypassing of first-pass metabolism. A plant which comes to my mind is Acorus calamus.Wink

Are you saying you have experience with boofing (rectal absorption of) calamus? How would you prepare it?

There are a good number of threads on the rectal ROA on the forum already although they are not particularly organised. Now there's a project, creating the index thread for all those boofing threads.

Thanks downwardfromzero, I will have to check out that index thread!

I do not have any experience with Acorus calamus, however it seems to me that the extreme nausea from the arasones which is the limiting factor to dosing is either a result from its pharmacology or pharmacokinetics. If it is based around its toxicity to the stomach/and small intestine this could be bypassed. If I had more access to live plants or a reliable way to grow from seed (and it wasn't -4C outside) I would already begin my experimentation which would consist of acetone washed vs unwashed water extracts orally and then rectally. IF the activity in calamus are related to the way it is metabolized in the liver, this would help me find out as rectal absorption would bypass first-pass metabolism, a question which has not been answered yet. I have repeatedly whilst under harmala influence chewed or consumed small amounts of plant material (while dieting) and felt that oral is not the route this drug/plant/fungi/etc should take. I AM GOING TO TRY THIS

I would like to boof Peganum harmala (I need to do more research on dosing that ROA) simultaneously with boofed DMT/and or other psychedelics (psilocin via extraction) I also feel that the toxicity of trimyristin (fatty acid in nutmeg which is extremely toxic to the liver) could instead of being absorbed and passed through the liver either be absorbed in small quantities or not at all. Now obviously nutmeg rectally is not something I, or anyone should just try considering its diverse and complex chemistry and relation to the cytochrome P450 system in the liver. This link has a small page with historically used (and more recent) rectal use of plants, something to play around with I think.

Here's a couple of things: Acorus gramineus (or at least the variegated variety 'Ogon') is readily available and reasonably frost tolerant. That's no guarantee of a desirable effects profile, of course.

Transdermal nutmeg tincture is surprisingly effective. I found this out by attempting to use it as a hand sanitizer Laughing And while even I wouldn't plug tincture, nutmeg-infused olive oil is also a thing Wink. Seeing as you've mentioned it, here is my standard response (required reading for those with an interest in nutmeg).

Thanks for the tip on Acorus gramineus! Damn, I didn't even think about transdermal Myristica fragrans.. I've been working with nutmeg for a year here and there. I need to get some DMSO or oil so I can get rid of the trimyristin, (haven't read your "standard response" yet) but transdermal will!

Hi Lemon Flip. I have used harmine/harmaline hcl extracted from peganum harmala a number of times in larger volume enemas. I have done maybe 20 or so in the past 2 years, in low doses I dont think have gone above 30ish mg. My intent was never to trip, but to help deal with chronic IBD due to an auto immune disorder. I can tell you that I was always okay, never had an issue with it(and if someone would it would probly be myself). I mostly have used a water infusion of chammomile with the harmalas.

Rue tea might be a whole other thing. A lot of these plants have stuff in them I cant put into my intestines from either end. It's plant extracts for me.
Long live the unwoke.
