This guy looks confused...

Day 10 on my grain jars. I don’t think I shook the syringe enough to disperse the spores, as the first couple have way more growth than the last two. The furthest to the left has one kernel with mycelium on it. But they’re all showing life! Oh happy day!

Looks like a great start man. The shaking of the syringe was fine, you have growth. That’s all that mattters, some will be quicker than others. Be patient and expand all those jars separately, you should have some serious options in a few weeks!

I wanna wait till half or so is colonized before shaking the jar, correct?

Update, lost Half my jars. 5 dried out as I had to big of air holes is my assumption. And one jar looks like a patch of cobweb is starting. Still have 7 jars left that are almost fully colonized. Almost ready for spawning!

How are the grain jars?

You mentioned holes being too big, what did you use for a filter?

The grain jars are ok. I’ve lost a little over half. Another 2 jars started to show contams.

I had glued pieces of filter discs over the holes, but when I went to do my transfers, the glue turned brittle and the pieces fell off. So I put some tyvek tape over the holes. Only the jars that had the tape replacement seemed to dry up and stop colonizing. I still have 5 quart jars left. And I’m a little sketched out on those, as there is some yellow ness in spots that I can’t tell if it’s from the rye berries getting smashed up and “juicing” from shaking the jar. It dosnt look like mold, and it’s only near a chunk of squished berries.

Grains that are sterile and properly hydrated wouldn’t get juicy from shaking, from what I’ve seen. Could be a bacterial issue.

I am old school with jars, but just three small nail holes, flip the inner lid so the pointy parts are up then a tyvek layer or similar under the seam. I use agar though not syringes, all SAB friendly.

All the gluing and such just adds failure points IMO. My last run was 84 jars over 3 months and only lost a few to contam, has a batch of overcooked grain that I pitched the 5 other anyway because the hydration sucked, and 1 other that I fumbled the transfer on and it got SAB floor germs.

Those jars look very bacterial, i would not expect much there sorry to say. Sniff test when opening, if it’s sour I would dump them.

I was worried about this. I thought it looked to funky to be normal. I started 15 brf jars a week ago because the grain jars started to sketch me out. It’s a bummer to, because the grain jars were APEs and I was looking forward to a tub full of those! My g2g was not in the best of conditions, so I’m guessing this is where I went amuck. Next up on to do list: make a decent glove box!

Current shoebox grow I have going. Of 5 boxes I started, 2 are going strong. The other successful box not pictured just showed a couple pins today, so it’s not far behind.
