NBOME's are known to be a lot less safe than traditional classic hallucinogens like DMT, LSD, mescaline, psilocin, etc.
I've noticed that they are still being taken though. I would have expected them to completely disappear from the scene, but apparently they haven't.
Should the psychedelic community discourage the use of these substances?
Apart from it just being good advice not to touch these substances anyway, i personally think it would likely be very much in our own interest to do so as well. They have the potential to cause a lot of the very worst kind of bad press.

For sure they should be discouraged. Several deaths have been reported, their safety profile isnt promissing, difference between effective and toxic dosage is too small to allow for typical mistakes people make when dosing themselves, etc
That being said, there will still be some people who will take them, and some people like them a lot, so best we can do is inform them about risks and safety recommendations.

The only upside is shorter duration, otherwise I don't know why would anyone prefer NBOMEs to acid.

Designer drugs. Tsk, tsk. I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want a clever signature.

NBOME’s are Kappa Opioid agonists (the same as salvia and ibogaine). Kappa opioid agonism is the cause of ibogaine and salvia’s anti-addiction qualities. Salvia has been demonstrated to break cocaine addiction in rats, and we all know ibogaine’s effects on opioid withdrawal.
After just a few trips on NBOME a friend of mine who was doing an eightball a day of coke said he spontaneously lost the “urge to snort”, and got off coke. It was years later that I learned about kappa opioid agonism. Ibogaine can kill you too.
I wouldn’t say they’re useless. It’s a funner way to get off coke than ibogaine or salvia, which are both pretty unpleasant.
But for pure recreation? Yeah, I’d say they should be discouraged, and people should be educated about the dangers associated with them. Just like almost everything Shulgin’s lab produced or later inspired, it’s valuable stuff with some dangers attached.

At risk of being a debbie downer, anyone i turn on to (or know takes) psychedelics, i try to educate them on the dangers of NBOMEs. I will happily test what they have, rather that than someone die.
If they're interested enough in understanding the chemistry, I'll encourage research. Generally though, if it's not tested, do NOT mix and do not go for heroic doses.

I think we should discourage their use, why take them when there are other psychedelics available? Novelty? Maybe some people can only find nbomes? Not everyone is resourceful. Why would you have expected them to completely disappear? At least a quarter of people who do drugs don't care what they put in their bodies. bismillah wrote:Designer drugs. Tsk, tsk. What's wrong with designer drugs? A lot of great chemicals are considered "research chemicals". Weren't the nbomes originally synthesized by David E. Nichols to map out the serotonin receptors?
