Up to this point, I've been using Zippo lighter fluid to do freeze precips for my MHRB extractions. The thing is, it's super expensive and comes in a small bottle. My naphtha has been evaporating little by little with each use and I'll have to replace it soon. The only other stuff I know of that I can easily get around here (Toronto) is Ronsonol which I hear has lots of mystery additives in it that are difficult to remove.

One thing I do have plenty of is pure methyl hydrate, though. I know it would dissolve DMT and other alkaloids, but would they precipitate out in the freezer? Or would I have to evaporate it outside?

If methanol is a bad choice, I will gladly take suggestions for affordable solvents one could find in the GTA.

Cheers!

Methanol is soluble in water.

You could use methanol if doing a dry tek. Theres a thread on here about extracting using ethanol and sodium carbonate. Methanol could be substituted for ethanol in that case.

Methanol won’t freeze precipitate your alkaloids so would need to be evaporated. I would advise against using it without the correct safety equipment though as methanol is very toxic.

For freeze precipitation your alternatives to naphtha are heptane/hexane. Try Primus Powerfuel if you can find it.

Otherwise buy some limonene online and salt out following the steps in BLAB.

I imagine methanol would pull more polar junk from the bark than ethanol with this method. Do you think that would cause any issues?

Methanol dissolves more salts in greater quantity than ethanol or isopropanol; add that to its toxicity and it's really not a suitable solvent for the layman to use.

Get clever and source an affordable naphtha alternative. Canadian retail sources are outside my field of knowledge but you should be able to track something down at artists' supply stores, for example.

“There is a way of manipulating matter and energy so as to produce what modern scientists call 'a field of force'. The field acts on the observer and puts him in a privileged position vis-à-vis the universe. From this position he has access to the realities which are ordinarily hidden from us by time and space, matter and energy. This is what we call the Great Work."
