Well i went and got some acetone at the same shop as always - same brand as always - got home and when i opened it, the entire room was filled with a terrible smell in seconds. A smell that is so bad its even horrible to think about it. Kinda like some sort of ant poison or something.

I went back to the shop to complain and the dude was hardly concerned - that bothered me alot, this stuff was to my nose - deadly poisonous and ppl use acetone for all sorts of things. The only reasonable explination could be a screw up at the chem bottling plant.(and its a very common brand that supplies all sorts of chemicals)

Lesson - Know your solvents, had this been my first time purchasing acetone - first time using it - had i used it - perhaps to pick up spice and evap - i could have possibly died(no doubt in my mind less than 1cc of that vile stuff would kill you)

I dont know how this can be used to help but please ppl, know your solvents!!!

Had he more quickly realized just who they were,he would have shown them more respect.Had he tried harder to fathom their brilliant minds,he would have taken more of their teachings to heart.Had he more clearly understood the purpose of their being,
he would have more vigorously tried to assist them. They were truly honorable; he was sadly prejudiced.
They were exceedingly well informed; he was grossly ignorant. They were totally indefatigable; he so often, and so quickly, gave up. Still, for many years there was a strong inter-species alliance between the Eleven-Eleven of the Half-way Realm, their Seraphic Associates, and their flesh-and-blood friend, a common mortal. Much was accomplished, many profited, and, there’s only one regret...They could have achieved so much more...

If you climate is hot and you open acetone bottle it will immediately start to evaporate. It doesn't have the most pleasant smell anyway have you ever smelled acetone before?

and ammonia smells like flowers in comparison - this smelled like actual real poison of some kind.

ohh..

aside from its flammability, acetone is rather safe
even safer to handle than ether, since you don't really have to worry about peroxides forming, unless you react it with
concentrated hydrogen peroxide (don't do that)

Yea thats a different story then. See if you can contact the supplier. I mean the company who manufactures it not the guy who sold it to you who as you said doesn't care. If they are legit they would be interested in knowing about this. It can happen that bottles are unlabeled or someone never check purity. Just have good excuse for using it.

all the more reason to never use anything from a hardware store. Or if you simply must, then to distill it.

acetone from ace or lowe's is pure, afaik
much cheaper than ordering ACS-grade acetone.
