Swim only has access to a plastic funnel and baster at the moment. Its not the HDPE..... would lye eat away at the plastic even if only in contact for a few seconds?

I wouldn't think so, depends really on the type of plastic and whether the lye is hot or not. Hot lye mix will kind of melt PET. Give it a go and see.

it's not the lye you need to worry about doing that, it's the nonpolar solvent.
