Goto an organic store or a store with an organic section and buy a few pounds of whole rye grains. Rinse them alittle then put a cup of grains in a quart jar followed with 3/4 cup water then pressure cook for 1 hour at 15 psi. That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die.

Wild Birdseed will work, you just gotta remove the sunflower seeds and other empty (nutritionally anyway) seeds as they float to the surface during the soak. WBS has worked great in my experience, the only thing is that for some reason I have a paranoia that they contam easier and therefore like to colonize them from liquid cultures rather than spore syringes... Wild Bird Seed, Rice, Rye, Oats, Coffee grounds, etc, etc. You can grow on anything really if you add some nutrient solution and sterilize it.
PF Tek is simplest though, and using rice for it is the best. The people who have been working with the PF-tek have tried dozens of substrates and there is a reason why the PF-Tek is recommended for beginners. It's easy to acquire(buy rice and grind it into a flour), and it's nutrient rich.
I will always support the pf tek, for small scale, or a simple method of spawning to bulk.
Honestly go to the store and buy a 2 pound bag of rice for like 3 dollars. Grind it up and wablam.
