Wrong solvent? Anyone knows about Klean Strip Painter’s Solvent? Options

Trying to do an extraction Acacia following Cyb's hybrid tek. Everything went accordingly until the step where the solvent is used. I did not find naphthat, but instead picked up this Klean Strip Painter's Solvent - [ Klean-Stripp Painter’s Solvent is a premium, highly refined solvent formula that replaces MEK, Toluene, Xylene and VM&P Naphtha for most applications. It is also excellent for cleaning tools and equipment after a painting project. ]

The label doesn't say what exactly is in the solution.

Well, hours later I have yet to see any separation... I think this solvent has failed me. I think I'll try to salvage it with base tomorrow and see if I can get anything out of it. Anyone with failed solvent salvage experience???

Here's the link if anyone is interested - http://www.kleanstrip.com/product/painters-solvent

Before purchasing solvent, make sure to read the chemical composition.

This particular brand contains:

Acetone {2-Propanone} 60.0 -95.0 %
Methyl acetate (Methyl ester of acetic acid} 5.0 -25.0 %
Hydrotreated light distillate (petroleum) 2.0 -5.0 %

Just search the MSDS, it should tell you the main constituents.

Thanks Bodhisativa. Yes I should had done more research than just jump in blindly... It's been a while since I dabble in chemistry and the terms.

So I've been reading up other threads and there's someone mentioned possible solvent instead of naphtha (where it's not available). Acetone is on the list as a solvent. However in this case it's been hours and there's no sign of separation. So for whatever reason either acetone or the mixture of the solvent does not work as intended in this case. I'll use a different solvent in the future.

Now with the current mixture I have, will mix the solution with vinegar and then pull with Sodium Carbonate to get freebase possibly work?

Acetone is completely miscible with water, as you have found. I would suggest evaporating off all liquid until you have a dry powder, then you could try pulling from the powder with the Klean Strip that you already have. This would be a bit on the experimental side, though.

Acetone reacts with acids and bases to form undesirable, less-volatile compounds which may mess things up a bit. You'd be best off doing a mini A/B on any product pulled from the mixture you currently have.

^This would not work. You could try pulling with proper naphtha if you can get any but there's no guarantee that would separate effectively. If naphtha did work you'd best follow up with some purification step or other.

Check the wiki for more pointers on how alkaloid extraction works, it seems to me you're not quite grasping it yet.

Thanks @downwardsfromzero -- I eventually tried to evaporate the mixture (bath in hot water) hoping the initial solvent would completely evaporated. Then I add naphtha (found a supply store has), but what came out after the pull were very little yellowish gooey stuffs. Even though I had left it to dry for a day, the minimal amount of gooey stuffs still smell of solvent.

As you have said, mixing acetone might have formed something undesirable and less able to evaporate in the mixture. So I'm cutting my loss and start off new...
