These demos are computer programs that generate what you see (and sometimes what you hear) in real time, frame by frame, like a computer game. There are usually several people involved: one of them does the programming (code), another composes the music, a third paints the graphics and a fourth orchestrates the parts into an artistic whole. The result is a demo which is then presented to the world in the form of an executable and a bunch of data files which you can run on your own computer (if it is capable enough). The videos I posted are just captures of the real thing.
