I ran into the issue getting the dark red solvent which is mentioned in the wiki twice now and at least for me the duration of the pull was critical. When inserting and getting the Petroleum Ether out within 24-48 hours I get a solvent with a yellow touch giving me close to white DMT but when inserting the Petroleum Ether and letting it stand for a longer period of time (say 3 month) I get the described dark red stuff.
The picture shows that dark red Petroleum Ether forming 2 layers after freeze preparation. After freezing I decanted most of the Petroleum Ether used as solvent and gathered everything that was on the bottom of my Pyrex vessel in the shot glass. I need to mention that the Petroleum Ether which was decanted went from being dark red to being slightly yellow in the process meaning that everything giving the red color gathered on the bottom along with the spice. The upper layer in the picture contains most of the red stuff while the bottom layer contains the spice. I separated those 2 layers and dried them out separately. The white layer gave me spice with a slight orange touch while the red layer gave me extremely oily dark red stuff. While the the wiki refers to it as "microscopic suspended particles" which is a rather overall expression it seemed like mostly plant fats to me judging from consistency, the reaction to water and how I had to clean my glass ware that came it in touch with it. "Carbonate wash" and "mini A/B" are obviously mentioned for purification in the FAQ but I want to stress the undesirability of the red stuff at this point.
I have never used any other method than going STB with an extremely high PH while using Petroleum Ether as solvent so my experiences might be very narrow but it seems to me that under certain circumstances like the extremely long pulls I made the Petroleum Ether dissolves considerable amounts of plant fats. The heated pulls mentioned in the wiki might tremendously speed up that process.
I also read somewhere that virtuous shaking might have an influence but from my experiences I am able to say that duration (and likely heat) take(s) a much larger role in this situation.
